Most Muslims know that Allah accepts repentance. But few know that there was a man whose sincere return to Allah became one of the greatest examples of tawbah in Islamic history.
Ka’b ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) was a respected Companion of the Prophet ﷺ. He had fought in many battles alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. However, when the expedition to Tabuk was announced, he kept delaying his preparations.
“I still have time.”
“I’ll prepare tomorrow.”
Days passed until the Muslim army had already departed. By then, he had no excuse.
When the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah, many people who had stayed behind came with false excuses. They lied, and the Prophet ﷺ accepted their outward statements, leaving their reality to Allah.
Ka’b could have done the same.
Instead, he stood before the Prophet ﷺ and said the truth.
He admitted that he had no excuse.
The Prophet ﷺ did not respond immediately. Instead, he instructed the Muslim community not to speak to Ka’b and the two other Companions who had also stayed behind without excuse.
Imagine living in Madinah the city that once welcomed you with smiles—and suddenly no one would greet you. Friends turned away. Conversations stopped. Even relatives avoided speaking to you.
This continued for fifty days.
The earth felt narrow despite its vastness.
During those difficult days, the King of Ghassan sent Ka’b a letter inviting him to leave Madinah and join his kingdom, promising him honour and status.
Many people would have seen it as an escape.
Ka’b immediately threw the letter into the fire.
He refused to exchange the pleasure of Allah for the comfort of this world.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
Allah revealed verses in Surah At-Tawbah (9:118), announcing that He had accepted the repentance of Ka’b and his two companions.
News spread across Madinah.
People rushed to congratulate him.
The Prophet ﷺ smiled brightly when Ka’b entered the mosque and said:
“Rejoice in the best day you have had since your mother gave birth to you.”
What made Ka’b special was not that he made a mistake. Many people make mistakes.
What distinguished him was that he refused to cover his mistake with another sin. He chose honesty over convenience, sincerity over reputation, and patience over despair.
On this blessed Jumu’ah, ask yourself:
Are there sins I continue to justify instead of sincerely repenting from?
Allah’s door of mercy remains open. No matter how long you have delayed, today can become the day your story changes just as it changed for Ka’b ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه).
May Allah grant us truthful hearts, sincere repentance, and the ability to return to Him before it is too late. Ameen.
