One of the most remarkable stories mentioned in the Qur’an is not only about righteous young men who stood firm upon their faith it is also about a dog whose loyalty earned it a place in Allah’s Book until the Day of Judgment.

The story of the People of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf) is well known. A group of young believers lived under the rule of a tyrannical king who demanded that everyone worship idols. Refusing to compromise their faith, they abandoned their homes, wealth, families, and social status for the sake of Allah.

As they fled to a cave seeking Allah’s protection, something unexpected happened.

A dog followed them.

The Qur’an tells us that the dog stretched its forelegs at the entrance of the cave while the youths slept. It stood guard over them throughout the years they remained inside.

Allah says:

“And you would have thought them awake, while they were asleep… and their dog stretched its forelegs at the entrance…” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:18)

The dog did not preach.

It did not perform acts of worship like humans.

It simply chose to stay with people who were obedient to Allah.

That companionship became an honour unlike any other. Its story was preserved in the Qur’an and is recited by millions of Muslims every week, especially on Fridays.

There is a profound lesson here.

The company we keep shapes our future.

The young men became legends because of their unwavering faith.

The dog became remembered because it accompanied people of faith.

The opposite is also true. A righteous person who constantly surrounds himself with people who encourage sin gradually becomes desensitised to wrongdoing. Likewise, someone trying to improve spiritually benefits enormously from the company of sincere believers.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The example of a good companion and a bad companion is that of the seller of musk and the blacksmith…” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

A good friend leaves you with something beneficial, while a bad companion may leave you harmed even if you never intended it.

This Jumu’ah, take a moment to reflect on your circle.

Who reminds you to pray?

Who encourages you to read the Qur’an?

Who helps you become a better Muslim?

And just as importantly, whose faith are you strengthening through your own companionship?

Never underestimate the impact of good company. Sometimes, simply staying close to righteous people can change the course of your life.

May Allah bless us with companions who bring us closer to Him, protect us from harmful influences, and gather us with the righteous in Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.
