WHY MUSLIMS SHOULD STAND AGAINST INJUSTICE
Have you ever witnessed someone being treated unfairly but remained silent because you did not want to get involved?
Perhaps a student was being bullied, an employee was being cheated or someone was being blamed for something they did not do.
Sometimes, people remain silent because the person responsible is powerful, popular or influential.
But as Muslims, we must understand that justice should not depend on who is involved.
ALLAH COMMANDS US TO STAND FOR JUSTICE
Allah says:
**”O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives…”**
*Qur’an 4:135 — translation of the meaning.*
This verse gives us a powerful lesson: justice must not be influenced by personal relationships, wealth, status or self-interest.
If someone close to you is wrong, you should not defend their wrongdoing simply because you love them.
Likewise, if someone you dislike is treated unfairly, you should not celebrate the injustice.
A Muslim should value what is right above personal loyalty.
SILENCE CAN SOMETIMES ALLOW WRONGDOING TO CONTINUE
Imagine that a group of students repeatedly mocks one particular classmate.
Everyone sees what is happening, but nobody speaks up because they are afraid of becoming the next target.
Or imagine an employee being denied what they have rightfully earned while others pretend not to notice.
These situations remind us that injustice can continue when people refuse to act responsibly.
However, standing against injustice does not mean putting yourself in unnecessary danger.
You can report wrongdoing to appropriate authorities, support the person being harmed, provide truthful information or seek help from someone with the ability to intervene.
DO NOT CONFUSE LOYALTY WITH DEFENDING WRONGDOING
You may love your friend, sibling, parent or colleague, but love should not make you support their wrongdoing.
If someone you care about is behaving unjustly, advise them respectfully and encourage them to correct their actions.
Helping someone recognise and stop their wrongdoing is better than helping them continue it.
BE FAIR EVEN WHEN IT IS DIFFICULT
Before judging a situation, establish the facts.
Avoid spreading rumours or making accusations without reliable information. Listen carefully, consider the rights of everyone involved and seek appropriate guidance where necessary.
Justice requires honesty, fairness and responsibility.
HEART CHECK
Do not measure what is right by the popularity of the person doing it.
Your responsibility is to stand for truth and fairness, even when doing so is uncomfortable.
Never allow your friendship, family connection or personal interest to become an excuse for supporting injustice.
REFLECTION: Have you ever supported someone simply because they were close to you, even when you knew they were wrong?
DU’A: O Allah, make us people of justice and truth. Protect us from oppression, help us defend those who are wronged and prevent us from becoming unjust towards others. Ameen.
