THE DANGER OF WASTING FOOD AND OTHER BLESSINGS

You prepare more food than you can eat and throw the remaining portion away. You buy things you do not need simply because you want them. You leave taps running, waste electricity or carelessly damage things that could have lasted longer.

These actions may seem ordinary, but they raise an important question: Are we treating the blessings Allah has given us responsibly?

As Muslims, we should understand that enjoying blessings also comes with the responsibility of using them wisely.

ALLAH WARNS AGAINST EXTRAVAGANCE

Allah says:

“O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.” Qur’an 7:31

This verse reminds us that Islam permits us to enjoy what is lawful, but we should avoid excess.

Being grateful for food does not only mean saying Alhamdulillah before eating. It also means treating food responsibly and avoiding unnecessary waste.

FOOD IS A BLESSING, NOT SOMETHING TO TREAT CARELESSLY

Many people struggle to afford regular meals, while others throw away perfectly good food because they prepared more than they needed.

We should learn to serve reasonable portions, store food properly and share excess food when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

Do not buy more than you can reasonably use simply because something is available.

When food is left over, consider whether it can be stored safely for another meal or shared with someone who needs it.

WASTE GOES BEYOND FOOD

Allah has blessed us with many resources, including water, time, money, clothing, knowledge and opportunities.

We should avoid using these blessings carelessly.

For example:
– Turn off taps when water is not needed.
– Avoid unnecessary electricity consumption.
– Take care of your belongings.
– Buy according to your needs and financial ability.
– Avoid throwing away useful items unnecessarily.
– Use your time for beneficial activities.

These are practical ways to demonstrate responsibility and gratitude.

GRATITUDE SHOULD INFLUENCE YOUR ACTIONS

Sometimes, we complain about what we do not have while treating what we already possess carelessly.

We ask Allah for more opportunities but fail to make good use of the opportunities already available.

We ask for more wealth but spend without planning.

We ask for good health but neglect healthy habits.

Gratitude should encourage us to value what Allah has given us and use it in beneficial ways.

HEART CHECK

The food on your table, the water you drink, the clothes you wear and the resources available to you are all blessings.

Do not wait until you lose something before recognising its value.

Be grateful for your blessings, enjoy what is halal and avoid wasting what Allah has provided.

REFLECTION: What is one blessing you frequently waste or take for granted, and what can you do to use it more responsibly?

DU’A:O Allah, make us grateful for Your blessings, protect us from extravagance and help us use what You have provided in ways that please You. Ameen.
