Before posting a picture online, most people ask:
“Do I look good?”
But a Muslim should also ask:
**“Is this appropriate for me to share?”**
Social media has made it easy to take a picture and send it to hundreds or thousands of people within seconds.
That convenience comes with responsibility.
NOT EVERY PICTURE NEEDS TO BE POSTED
You don’t have to post everything you do.
Some moments are better kept private.
Your life doesn’t need to become a public diary.
Before posting, ask yourself:
Why am I posting this?
Is it beneficial?
Is it simply for attention?
Could it expose something that should remain private?
Could it cause temptation or harm?
THINK ABOUT MODESTY
Muslim men and women have Islamic requirements concerning awrah and modesty.
A Muslim should therefore consider whether their clothing and appearance in a photograph meet the requirements of Islamic modesty.
For women, this also includes considering Hijab and what is appropriate to display before non-mahrams.
For men, modesty applies too.
Islamic modesty is not only a women’s issue.
WHAT ABOUT BEAUTY AND SHOWING OFF?
Looking good isn’t automatically wrong.
Taking a nice picture isn’t automatically wrong either.
But constantly seeking admiration, displaying blessings for attention, or becoming obsessed with likes and comments can affect the heart.
Ask yourself:
“If nobody liked this picture, would I still be happy that I posted it?”
Sometimes the answer tells you why you really wanted to post it.
BE CAREFUL WITH OTHER PEOPLE’S PICTURES
Don’t post someone else’s picture without considering their privacy and permission.
Especially don’t share embarrassing pictures, private photographs or images that could damage someone’s reputation.
A funny picture to you could be painful to someone else.
THINK BEFORE YOU POST
Once something is online, you may lose control over where it goes.
Someone can screenshot it.
Download it.
Forward it.
Save it.
Even deleting a post doesn’t guarantee that nobody has kept a copy.
So pause before pressing POST.
YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE IS PART OF YOUR CHARACTER
Being a good Muslim isn’t only about how you behave inside the mosque.
It is also about how you behave on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp and everywhere else.
Your online character should reflect your Islamic values.
HEART CHECK
You don’t need to disappear from social media to protect your Deen. You need wisdom. Post what is beneficial, protect your privacy, observe modesty, respect other people’s dignity and remember: Not everything you can post is something you should post.
