WHEN YOU PRAY BUT YOUR HEART FEELS DISTRACTED
Have you ever stood for Salah, only to realise that your mind is somewhere else? You begin reciting Al-Fatihah, but your thoughts are already thinking about school, work, family problems or something you saw on your phone.
Before you know it, you have completed your prayer but cannot remember much of what you recited.
This happens to many Muslims. However, it is important not to become comfortable with praying without giving attention to what we are doing.
UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF KHUSHU
Khushu means humility, attentiveness and submissiveness in worship. It involves having a heart that is conscious of Allah while performing Salah.
Allah says:
“Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive.” Qur’an 23:1–2
These verses remind us that successful believers are described by their humility and attentiveness in prayer.
Salah is not simply a routine we complete five times a day. It is an opportunity to stand before our Creator, remember Him and seek His guidance.
WHY DOES YOUR MIND WANDER DURING SALAH?
Distractions can come from different sources. Sometimes, we are worried about something that happened earlier. At other times, we rush into prayer without preparing ourselves mentally.
Our attachment to phones, entertainment and constant notifications can also make it difficult to remain focused.
The solution is not to abandon the effort because concentration is difficult. Instead, we should keep working towards improving our prayer.
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR CONCENTRATION?
1. Understand what you recite.
Learning the meanings of Al-Fatihah and the other surahs you recite can help you become more conscious of your words.
2. Avoid unnecessary rushing.
Give yourself enough time to perform each part of Salah properly.
3. Remove distractions.
Put your phone aside and choose a place where you can pray without unnecessary interruptions.
4. Prepare before Salah.
Perform your wudu calmly and remind yourself that you are about to stand before Allah.
5. Keep trying.
If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your prayer. Do not allow one distracted prayer to make you give up on improving.
HEART CHECK
Do not allow Salah to become something you perform simply because it is time to pray.
Make an effort to understand your recitation, slow down and remember the One before whom you are standing.
Your relationship with Allah deserves your attention.
REFLECTION: When you pray, are you conscious of the words you recite, or are you simply waiting to finish?
DU’A: O Allah, make my heart humble before You, help me remember You during Salah and grant me concentration and sincerity in my worship. Ameen.
