THE AWRAH: WHAT EVERY YOUNG MUSLIM SHOULD KNOW

There are certain parts of the body that Islam teaches Muslims to keep covered.
This is known as Awrah
For young Muslims, understanding Awrah is important because it affects how we dress, pray, behave around others and present ourselves online.
WHY DOES ISLAM TEACH US ABOUT AWRAH?
Islam teaches modesty and protects human dignity.
Allah says: “O children of Adam, We have sent down to you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness—that is best.” Qur’an 7:26
Clothing is therefore not only about fashion.
It also serves the purpose of covering what should be covered.
AWRAH IS NOT THE SAME FOR EVERY SITUATION
The exact details of Awrah differ according to circumstances and scholarly rulings.
For example, the requirements concerning what a Muslim covers in Salah are not identical to every situation involving family members, non-mahrams or people of the same sex.
There are also differences in some details among scholars and schools of Fiqh.
This is why young Muslims should learn the basic rules from reliable teachers rather than simply following whatever appears on social media.
WHAT ABOUT YOUNG MEN?
Young Muslim men also have rules concerning Awrah and modest dress.
Modesty is not something that applies only to girls.
A Muslim man should dress appropriately, avoid exposing what must be covered and avoid clothing that is excessively revealing.
WHAT ABOUT YOUNG WOMEN?
Muslim women have specific requirements concerning Awrah and Hijab.
A young woman should learn what she is required to cover in Salah, around non-mahram men, around mahram relatives, and in other circumstances.
Learning these differences helps prevent confusion.
WHAT ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA?
This is especially important today.
A person may dress modestly in public but post revealing pictures online for thousands of people to see.
The internet doesn’t remove Islamic responsibilities.
Before posting a picture or video, think about whether what you’re displaying is appropriate.
DON’T TURN AWRAH INTO SHAME
Learning about Awrah should not make young Muslims feel ashamed of their bodies.
Your body is a creation and blessing from Allah.
Islam simply teaches you to treat it with dignity and respect.
MODESTY IS FOR EVERYONE
Awrah is part of a larger Islamic approach to modesty.
It includes clothing.
It includes behaviour.
It includes speech.
It includes lowering the gaze.
It includes respecting boundaries.
HEAET CHECK
Don’t let fashion trends decide everything about how you dress. Don’t let social media decide what is normal.
And don’t be embarrassed to learn the rules of your Deen.
Your body is an amanah from Allah. Treat it with dignity, protect your modesty, and learn the Fiqh that helps you worship Him correctly.
