RAMADAN 9: SALAH — THE FOUNDATION OF RELIGION

Salah is the central pillar of a Muslim’s daily life. It structures the believer’s time, disciplines the soul, and anchors the heart in constant remembrance of Allah. From Fajr at dawn to ‘Isha at night, the day revolves around prayer  not the other way around.

THE PURPOSE OF SALAH

Allah سبحانه وتعالى says in the Qur’an:

“And establish prayer for My remembrance.”

This verse defines the essence of salah: remembrance (dhikr). Prayer is not merely physical movement. It is conscious standing before the Creator, speaking to Him, seeking His guidance, and humbling oneself before His greatness.

Salah reconnects the servant to his Lord five times a day. In Ramadan, when hearts are already softened by fasting, prayer becomes even more transformative.

THE VIRTUE AND STATUS OF SALAH

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Islam is built upon five…” and he mentioned establishing prayer among them.
Sahih al-Bukhari

This hadith establishes salah as a pillar  remove it, and the structure weakens.

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ described prayer as a purification. If a person were to bathe in a river five times a day, would any dirt remain? The companions replied no. He said this is the example of the five daily prayers; Allah wipes away sins through them.
Sahih Muslim

Salah is therefore not only obligation  it is cleansing, elevation, and protection.

SALAH IN RAMADAN

Ramadan strengthens discipline. The one who can abstain from food and drink for Allah can also commit to guarding their prayers. In fact, fasting without prayer weakens the spiritual foundation. Prayer completes and perfects the fast.

Taraweeh adds another dimension, allowing extended standing in recitation of the Qur’an and deep reflection.

HOW TO BEGIN OR DEEPEN YOUR PRAYER THIS RAMADAN

1. Guard the five daily prayers strictly on time.
2. Learn the meanings of what you recite, especially Surah Al-Fatihah.
3. Improve your khushu‘ (focus) by minimizing distractions before prayer.
4. Add voluntary prayers, even two extra rak‘ahs consistently.
5. Make du‘a in sujood  the closest position to Allah.

Start where you are. If you struggle with consistency, focus on one prayer and perfect it, then build gradually. If you already pray regularly, deepen the quality. Ramadan is a training ground for lifelong discipline.

Salah is not a burden. It is an honor a direct conversation with the Lord of the worlds.

May Allah strengthen our commitment to prayer, beautify it in our hearts, and make it the light of our lives. Ameen.
