SPIRITUAL DIGEST: RAMADAN DAY 3 (A DU’A FROM SURAH AL-BAQARAH)

The Spiritual Digest for Ramadan day 3 is a well-known supplication from the Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201):
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.
Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
This powerful dua is widely recited by Muslims, seeking goodness in both worldly life and the Hereafter, along with protection from Hellfire.
It is a comprehensive supplication that encapsulates both material and spiritual well-being.
Significance of This Dua:
This verse from Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201) is one of the most frequently recited supplications by Muslims. It is a comprehensive dua that asks for:
1. Goodness in this world (Hasanah fid-Dunya):
– Good health, lawful sustenance, success, peace, happiness, and beneficial knowledge.
– Protection from hardships, diseases, and calamities.
– A righteous spouse, obedient children, and a blessed life.
2. Goodness in the Hereafter (Hasanah fil-Akhirah):
– Forgiveness, mercy, and entry into Jannah (Paradise).
– The company of the righteous and closeness to Allah.
– Protection from the trials of the grave and the Day of Judgment.
3. Protection from the Fire (Azaban-Nar):
– Seeking refuge from Hellfire, which is the ultimate loss.
– Asking for Allah’s mercy and guidance to remain steadfast on the right path.
Hadith on This Dua:
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) frequently recited this dua and recommended it to his companions.
– Anas ibn Malik (RA) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say this supplication the most. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6389)
– It is also recommended to recite this dua during Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Sujood (prostration in prayer).
When to Recite This Dua:
– During daily prayers (Salah), especially in sujood (prostration).
– After obligatory prayers (Adhkar & Duas).
– During Tawaf (circumambulation) of the Kaaba in Hajj or Umrah.
– At times of hardship or distress, seeking ease and relief.
– When making personal supplications (Dua) for both worldly success and the Hereafter.
Lessons from This Dua:
– Islam encourages balance between worldly life and the Hereafter.
– We should strive for both material success and spiritual growth.
– True success is not just in wealth or status but also in faith, good deeds, and preparing for the Afterlife.
This dua is a powerful reminder that we should always seek Allah’s blessings, not just for our immediate needs, but for our eternal success as well.
