IS TALKING TO YOUR CRUSH HARAM? LET’S UNDERSTAND THE BOUNDARIES

You have a crush.

You want to talk to them.

Maybe you send a message:

“Hi ”

They reply.

Then you start chatting every day.

Soon, you’re talking from morning until midnight.

You may begin wondering:

“Is talking to my crush actually haram?

The answer requires us to look beyond the simple fact that you’re talking.

TALKING IS NOT AUTOMATICALLY HARAM

Islam does not prohibit every interaction between men and women.

There are legitimate reasons for communication.

Young Muslims may need to communicate with the opposite sex at school, university, work, business or other necessary situations.

The important issue is the nature, purpose and boundaries of the conversation.

WHEN DOES IT BECOME A PROBLEM?

Consider what you’re talking about.

Is the conversation necessary? Is it respectful? Are you flirting? Are you exchanging romantic or sexual messages?

Are you deliberately keeping the relationship secret? Are you talking late into the night because you simply don’t want the conversation to end? Are you becoming emotionally attached to someone you’re not married to?

These are signs that boundaries may be disappearing.

 “WE ARE JUST FRIENDS”

Sometimes people use the word “friendship” to make a relationship sound harmless.

But ask yourself honestly:

Would I speak to this person the same way if my parents, spouse or a trusted Muslim mentor could see the conversation? That question can reveal a lot.

WHAT DOES ISLAM TEACH?

Allah says: “Do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.” Qur’an 17:32

Islam doesn’t only warn against the final act. It also teaches believers to avoid pathways that can lead towards it.

A private, emotionally intense relationship can gradually cross boundaries even when a person initially had good intentions.

WHAT IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO MARRY THEM?

Then don’t allow a “crush” to become a secret relationship that lasts for years. If marriage is genuinely possible, take appropriate steps to explore marriage in a halal way. Learn about their character. Ask important questions. Seek advice.

Involve trusted people where appropriate. And remember: Being interested in someone does not make you married to them. Until Nikah, the boundaries between non-mahrams remain.

HEART CHECK

You don’t have to hate someone because you have feelings for them. You don’t have to pretend you don’t have emotions.

You simply need to learn how to control those emotions. Having a crush isn’t the test of your faith. What you do with that feeling is. Protect your heart before attachment makes it difficult to walk away from what displeases Allah.
