WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I DISCOVER IMPURITY ON MY CLOTHES AFTER SALAH?

Have you ever finished your salah and later discovered a stain or impurity on your clothes? You may immediately begin to wonder: *“Was my prayer accepted? Do I have to pray again?”*

Islam teaches cleanliness, but it also teaches us not to make religion unnecessarily difficult.

WHAT DOES ISLAM SAY?

Allah says:

“And your clothing purify.” — Qur’an 74:4

Before salah, a Muslim must take reasonable care to ensure that their body, clothes and place of prayer are free from physical impurities (*najasah*) that must be removed.

However, what you should do after discovering an impurity depends on the circumstances.

1. WHAT IF YOU DISCOVER IT AFTER PRAYER?

If you discover impurity on your clothes after salah and do not know whether it was there during the prayer, do not automatically assume that your prayer was invalid. Mere doubt is not the same as certainty.

If you are certain the impurity was present during salah, scholars differ on whether the prayer must be repeated in certain circumstances, including whether the person knew about it or forgot. Follow the reliable scholarly guidance of the school you practise.

2. WHAT IF YOU KNEW ABOUT IT BEFORE PRAYER?

If you know your clothes contain an impurity that must be removed, clean the affected area or change your clothes before praying whenever possible.

 3. DO NOT LET DOUBTS CONTROL YOU

If you keep wondering whether a stain is impure or whether it was there during salah, avoid repeatedly inspecting your clothes without a genuine reason. Islam does not require you to follow every suspicion.

WHAT SHOULD YOU REMEMBER?

* Remove known impurities before prayer.
* Do not assume your salah is invalid based on mere doubt.
* If you are certain an impurity was present, ask a knowledgeable scholar about your specific circumstances.
* Do not allow waswasah—persistent religious doubts—to make worship unbearable.

HEART CHECK

Islam values both purity and ease. Learn the rules, take reasonable precautions and do not let uncertainty turn your salah into a source of constant anxiety.
