YOUR SECRET DEEDS MATTER MORE THAN PEOPLE’S PRAISE
In a world where people constantly share their achievements, charitable activities, religious reminders, and personal milestones online, it is easy to begin measuring our worth by how many people notice us.
We want our efforts to be recognised. We want people to appreciate our kindness. We want our good deeds to be acknowledged.
There is nothing wrong with appreciating encouragement, but as Muslims, we must be careful not to allow people’s approval to become the reason we do good.
What you do when nobody is watching matters.
ALLAH KNOWS WHAT YOU DO
Allah reminds us in the Qur’an that He created death and life to test which of us is best in deeds.
Allah says:
“[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed…” (Qur’an 67:2, part of the verse).
This verse reminds us that our lives are a test, and our deeds matter.
It is not simply about how much we accomplish or how impressive our actions appear to others. We must also consider whether our deeds are sincere and whether they please Allah.
A person may receive praise from hundreds of people, yet still need to examine their intentions. Another person may perform a good deed that nobody knows about, but Allah knows every detail of it.
The difference is not in how many people witnessed the action. It is in its sincerity and whether it was done in accordance with what Allah has taught.
DO GOOD EVEN WHEN NOBODY APPLAUDS YOU
Imagine helping someone who cannot repay you. You give a little money to someone in need without announcing it. You wake up to pray when everyone else is asleep. You refrain from a sin because you remember that Allah sees you.
Nobody may congratulate you for these actions, but that does not make them meaningless.
A young Muslim should learn to do good because it is right and pleasing to Allah, not merely because it creates a good public image.
You do not need to record every act of kindness. You do not need to announce every time you pray, give charity, or help someone.
Some good deeds can remain between you and Allah.
At the same time, sharing beneficial reminders, encouraging others, or publicly participating in good activities can be permissible when the intention is sound. The lesson is not that every public good deed is wrong, but that we must guard our intentions.
BE CAREFUL OF SHOWING OFF
Sometimes, without realising it, we begin to change our behaviour depending on who is watching.
We may become more generous when people are present, more religious when we are being observed, or more concerned about our reputation than our relationship with Allah.
This is something every Muslim should reflect upon.
Ask yourself:
* Would I still perform this good deed if nobody knew about it?
* Am I doing this to please Allah or to impress people?
* Do I become discouraged when my good actions receive no recognition?
* Do I care more about appearing righteous than actually improving my character?
These questions are not meant to make you abandon good deeds out of fear. Rather, they should encourage you to renew your intentions and seek Allah’s acceptance.
BUILD A PRIVATE RELATIONSHIP WITH ALLAH
One way to strengthen sincerity is to develop good habits that do not depend on public recognition.
You could make du’a privately, give charity discreetly when appropriate, read the Qur’an regularly, seek forgiveness for your sins, and help others without expecting anything in return.
You may also keep a personal record of your spiritual goals, not to boast about your progress, but to reflect on areas where you need improvement.
Remember that private worship should never become an excuse to neglect your responsibilities towards other people. Islam teaches both sincere worship and good conduct.
HEART CHECK
Dear young Muslim, do not become so busy seeking people’s applause that you forget the One whose approval matters most.
People may forget your kindness. They may overlook your sacrifices. They may fail to appreciate your efforts.
But Allah knows what you do, what you intend, and what you struggle against.
Make sincerity one of your greatest goals. Seek Allah’s acceptance before seeking people’s admiration.
May Allah purify our intentions, protect us from showing off, and accept our righteous deeds. Ameen.
