WHEN YOU ARE AFRAID OF THE FUTURE

What will happen after school? Will I get a good job? Will I succeed in life? Will my family be okay? Will my dreams ever become reality?

These questions can become overwhelming, especially when you see other people making progress while you feel as though your own life is standing still.

As a young Muslim, you may sometimes worry about your education, finances, family, career or future marriage. Having these concerns does not mean you have weak faith. It means you are facing uncertainties about what lies ahead.

The important thing is learning how to respond to your fears.

REMEMBER WHO YOU RELY ON

Allah says: “Those to whom people said, ‘Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.’ But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.’” Qur’an 3:173

This verse reminds us of the faith shown by believers when they were warned about danger. Rather than allowing fear to weaken their trust in Allah, they turned towards Him.

Their example teaches us about *tawakkul*: placing our trust in Allah while doing what we reasonably can.

Trusting Allah does not mean that you will never feel afraid. It means that fear does not have to control your decisions or make you forget your Creator.

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY

Sometimes, we spend so much time worrying about tomorrow that we neglect the opportunities available to us today.

If you are worried about your education, develop a study plan and ask for help where necessary. If you are concerned about your career, learn useful skills and look for legitimate opportunities. If your finances worry you, learn to budget and make careful decisions.

You may not be able to solve every problem immediately, but you can take one useful step at a time.

Make du‘a, seek advice from trustworthy people and work towards your goals without believing that everything must happen at once.

DO NOT COMPARE YOUR TIMELINE WITH EVERYONE ELSE’S

Social media can make it appear as though everyone else has a perfect life. You see people graduating, getting jobs, travelling and achieving their dreams.

What you may not see are their struggles, sacrifices, disappointments or private challenges.

Your journey is not required to look exactly like someone else’s. Celebrate other people’s achievements without treating their success as proof that you have failed.

Keep working towards what is good for you, and ask Allah to bless you with what is beneficial in this life and the Hereafter.

YOUR FUTURE IS NOT YOURS TO CONTROL COMPLETELY

You can plan, prepare and work hard, but you cannot know everything that will happen. Some opportunities may take longer than expected. Some plans may change. You may face setbacks that teach you lessons you did not anticipate.

When this happens, do not assume that your life is over.

Keep making effort, seek guidance and trust Allah with what is beyond your control. If anxiety becomes overwhelming or begins affecting your daily life, speak to someone trustworthy or seek professional support.

HEART CHECK

You do not need to know every detail of your future before taking the next step.

Pray your salah. Make sincere du‘a. Develop your abilities. Make responsible choices. Seek halal opportunities and trust Allah with the outcome.

You are responsible for your effort, but you do not have to carry the entire future on your shoulders.

Reflection: What is one practical step you can take today towards a future that is good for your deen and your life?

Du‘a: O Allah, ease my worries about the future, guide me towards what is good, bless my efforts and grant me a heart that trusts You in times of uncertainty. Ameen.
