ANAS IBN MALIK (RA) GROWING UP IN THE HOUSE OF THE PROPHET ﷺ
HE WAS YOUNG, BUT HE WAS LEARNING FROM THE BEST
What would it be like to grow up around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and observe his character every day?
For Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, this was part of his remarkable experience.
Anas رضي الله عنه was a young companion who served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years. Through those years, he witnessed the Prophet’s ﷺ manners, patience, kindness and treatment of others.
One of the most beautiful things Anas رضي الله عنه reported was that the Prophet ﷺ never said an expression of displeasure to him such as “Uff” during those ten years, nor did he harshly question him by saying, “Why did you do that?” or “Why didn’t you do that?”
This narration is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
Think about what this means.
The Prophet ﷺ was a leader, a teacher and the Messenger of Allah, yet he treated a young person with remarkable patience.
He did not use his position to humiliate Anas رضي الله عنه.
His example teaches us that the way we treat people, especially those younger or less experienced than us, matters greatly.
WHAT CAN YOUNG MUSLIMS LEARN?
1. Learn from people of good character.
Knowledge is important, but observing how a person behaves can also teach you valuable lessons.
2. Treat younger people with kindness.
If you have younger siblings or children around you, remember that your words can affect their confidence and character.
3. Correct people without humiliating them.
Making a mistake does not mean someone deserves to be insulted.
4. Be patient with others.
Everyone is learning and growing. Give people room to improve.
WHAT CAN PARENTS, TEACHERS AND OLDER SIBLINGS LEARN?
The story of Anas رضي الله عنه is also a reminder to adults.
Children and young people need guidance, but they also need kindness.
You can correct a child without making them feel worthless. You can teach someone without shouting at them. You can maintain discipline without destroying their confidence.
The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated that patience and good character are essential parts of teaching.
HEART CHECK
Anas رضي الله عنه spent ten years serving the Prophet ﷺ and preserved valuable lessons from that experience for generations of Muslims.
You may forget some of the words people teach you, but you will often remember how they treated you.
Let your character be a lesson that people remember long after your words have been forgotten.
