CAN YOU MAKE WUDU WHILE WEARING SOCKS?

You are getting ready for salah, but you are already wearing your socks.

You wonder whether you must remove them before making wudu.

The good news is that Islamic jurisprudence provides guidance on wiping over certain types of footwear during purification.

This practice is known as *masah ‘ala al-khuffayn*, or wiping over the khuffs.

There are also scholarly discussions about wiping over ordinary socks.

WHAT DOES ISLAM SAY ABOUT WIPING OVER FOOTWEAR?

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wiped over his khuffs during purification. This practice is established in authentic narrations.

A khuff is traditionally a type of leather footwear that covers the feet and ankles.

Scholars also differ on the conditions under which wiping over ordinary socks is permissible.

Some allow it when specified conditions are met, while others place additional requirements on the socks.

Therefore, you should learn the ruling according to the school of Islamic jurisprudence you follow.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Under the recognised rules for wiping over qualifying footwear, a person first performs a complete wudu, including washing the feet, and puts on the footwear while in a state of purification.

When a later wudu is required, the person may wipe over the qualifying footwear instead of washing the feet, provided the relevant conditions remain satisfied.

You generally wipe the upper surface of the footwear with wet hands rather than washing the soles.

The details concerning the type of socks, how much of the foot they cover and other conditions differ among scholars.

CAN YOU PUT ON SOCKS WITHOUT FIRST MAKING WUDU?

The normal conditions for wiping over khuffs require that they be put on after completing the necessary purification.

Simply wearing socks does not automatically make them eligible for wiping during wudu.

If you put on your socks while you were not in a state of purification, you should not assume that wiping over them will be sufficient.

HOW LONG CAN YOU WIPE OVER THEM?

For residents, a widely recognised ruling permits wiping over qualifying khuffs for up to one day and one night. For travellers, the period is up to three days and three nights.

Scholars differ in some details concerning how this period is calculated and the conditions that apply.

If you follow a particular school, learn its method rather than mixing different rulings without understanding them.

DOES WIPING OVER SOCKS REPLACE GHUSL?

No.

Wiping over qualifying footwear is a concession relating to wudu. It does not replace the full-body purification required for janabah.

If ghusl becomes obligatory, you must fulfil the requirements of ghusl.

HEART CHECK

Islam provides concessions that make worship manageable, but those concessions have rules.

Learn the conditions for wiping over footwear before relying on the practice.

When you understand the ruling, you can perform your purification with greater confidence and avoid unnecessary confusion.
