DON’T LET SADNESS MAKE YOU FORGET ALLAH
Not every struggle is visible.
Some young Muslims smile in public but cry when they are alone.
Some are worried about their families.
Some are struggling academically or financially.
Some feel disappointed because their plans have not worked out.
Others are carrying pain they do not know how to explain.
Sometimes, sadness becomes so overwhelming that even the things we once enjoyed feel difficult.
If you are experiencing a painful season, remember that you do not have to pretend to be happy all the time.
And you do not have to face every difficulty alone.
Allah tells us about Prophet Ya’qub (Jacob), peace be upon him, who experienced profound grief over his son Yusuf (Joseph).
Allah says: “He said, ‘I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know.’”
>Qur’an 12:86 — translation of the meaning.
YOU CAN BE SAD AND STILL HAVE FAITH
Sometimes, people mistakenly believe that a good Muslim should never feel sad.
But the Qur’an itself tells us about the grief experienced by a prophet.
Feeling sadness does not automatically mean your iman is weak.
You may cry and still trust Allah.
You may feel disappointed and still make du’a.
You may need time to heal while continuing to believe in His mercy.
Prophet Ya’qub expressed his grief to Allah. His example reminds us that we can turn to our Creator with our pain rather than feeling that we must hide it from Him.
WHEN SADNESS BECOMES HEAVY, WHAT CAN YOU DO?
1. Speak to Allah honestly.
Make du’a in your own words. Tell Allah what is hurting you and ask Him for strength, guidance and relief.
2. Hold on to your salah.
Even when you do not feel emotionally strong, try to maintain your prayers. Let them be part of your connection with Allah during difficult days.
3. Talk to someone trustworthy.
You do not have to carry everything alone. Speak to someone who will listen without humiliating or dismissing you.
4. Take care of your body.
Try to get adequate sleep, eat regularly, move your body when you can and make time for rest.
5. Seek professional help when needed.
If sadness persists, interferes with your daily life or becomes difficult to manage, speaking with a qualified mental health professional can help. Seeking help is not a failure of faith.
If you ever feel at risk of harming yourself, reach out immediately to a trusted person and seek urgent professional support.
ALLAH KNOWS WHAT YOU CANNOT EXPLAIN
You may not have the words to describe your pain to another person.
You may not know how to solve the situation you are facing.
You may even struggle to understand your own emotions.
But you can still turn to Allah.
You can ask Him for ease while taking practical steps to improve your circumstances.
You can continue making du’a even when the answer has not come in the way or at the time you hoped.
And you can remind yourself that a difficult season does not define your entire life.
HEART CHECK
Do not let sadness convince you that you must turn away from Allah. Let your pain be one of the reasons you turn to Him, while also allowing yourself to receive support from people who can help.
May Allah comfort every troubled heart, ease the burdens of those who are struggling and grant us healing, hope and tranquillity. Ameen.
