For many Muslims, Jumu’ah ends the moment the Imam says As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah. Immediately after the prayer, they stand up, rush to their cars, return to their businesses, or continue with their daily activities.
While there may be genuine reasons why some people have to leave quickly, many Muslims miss an opportunity to earn additional rewards simply because they are in a hurry.
Jumu’ah should not end the moment the congregational prayer is over.
The moments after Jumu’ah can also be filled with acts of worship and remembrance of Allah.
One of the first things a Muslim should do after the prayer is to engage in dhikr. The Prophet ﷺ taught various supplications to be recited after the obligatory prayers. These words of remembrance are simple, yet they carry immense reward and help strengthen a believer’s connection with Allah.
Unfortunately, some people begin discussing business, answering phone calls, or checking social media before they even remember Allah after the prayer.
Another recommended practice is to perform the voluntary prayers after Jumu’ah.
Many Muslims leave immediately without offering these Sunnah prayers. Remaining in the mosque for a few extra minutes to complete them is a simple act that brings additional reward and allows the heart to remain engaged in worship.
The time after Jumu’ah is also an opportunity to make dua.
Friday is a blessed day, and scholars have mentioned that there is a special period during the day when Allah accepts the supplications of His servants. Although there are different scholarly opinions regarding the exact time, increasing one’s dua throughout Friday is highly encouraged.
Why not spend a few extra minutes asking Allah for forgiveness, guidance, good health, lawful sustenance, righteous children, and a good ending?
Another benefit of remaining in the mosque briefly is the opportunity to meet fellow Muslims.
Jumu’ah brings together members of the community who may not see each other during the week. Greeting one another with sincerity, checking on someone who has been absent, encouraging a young Muslim, or welcoming a visitor strengthens the bonds of brotherhood that Islam emphasises.
It is also a good time to reflect on the khutbah.
Ask yourself:
What was today’s main message?
What lesson can I apply this week?
Did the Imam remind me of something I need to improve?
The value of a khutbah is not in hearing it alone but in acting upon it.
Parents also have an important responsibility after Jumu’ah.
Rather than discussing only worldly matters on the way home, use the journey to ask your children what they learned from the khutbah. Encourage family discussions about Islamic teachings and help them understand the importance of Friday beyond attending the prayer.
If you have free time after Jumu’ah, continue your worship at home.
Read the Qur’an.
Send salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ.
Increase your dhikr.
Give charity if you are able.
Visit your parents or relatives.
Check on a neighbour.
Friday should be a day filled with good deeds from beginning to end.
One mistake that should be avoided is treating Jumu’ah as though it is simply another obligation to complete before returning to business.
The purpose of Friday is to renew faith, soften the heart, and remind believers of their relationship with Allah. That purpose should continue influencing your actions even after leaving the mosque.
Of course, Islam encourages Muslims to return to their lawful work after the prayer. Seeking halal sustenance is an act of worship. However, there is great benefit in giving yourself a few extra moments in the mosque before returning to the demands of daily life.
Those few minutes may become among the most valuable moments of your day.
As you attend Jumu’ah this week, resist the urge to rush away immediately after the prayer.
Remain for a little while.
Remember Allah.
Offer your Sunnah prayers.
Make sincere dua.
Reflect on the khutbah.
Leave the mosque with a heart that has been renewed, not simply with an obligation that has been completed.
