FROM ROUTINE TO RELATIONSHIP: BUILDING A REAL CONNECTION WITH ALLAH
You can pray every day and still feel distant.
You can recite Qur’an and still feel like something is missing.
You can make du’a because you know you should, while your heart struggles to feel connected.
This is why our relationship with Allah needs more than routine. We need to know Him, remember Him, speak to Him and turn to Him in every part of our lives.
ALLAH IS NOT ONLY THERE WHEN YOU NEED SOMETHING
Sometimes our relationship with Allah becomes focused mainly on asking.
“Ya Allah, give me this.”
“Ya Allah, help me pass.”
“Ya Allah, give me a job.”
“Ya Allah, solve this problem.”
There is nothing wrong with asking Allah. In fact, Allah encourages us to call upon Him.
But our relationship with Him should not begin and end with requests.
Take time to thank Him.
Praise Him.
Remember Him when life is going well, not only when life becomes difficult.
Allah says: “So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.” Qur’an 2:152
TALK TO ALLAH THROUGH DU’A
Du’a is not only for long lists of requests.
Tell Allah about your worries. Ask Him for guidance. Ask Him to strengthen your iman. Ask Him to forgive you. Ask Him to protect your heart.
You do not need complicated words.
Speak sincerely.
Allah knows what is hidden in your heart even before you put it into words.
GET TO KNOW ALLAH
How can you build a relationship with someone you do not know?
The same applies to your relationship with Allah.
Learn about His names and attributes.
Learn that Allah is Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful.
He is Al-Ghafur, the One who forgives.
He is Al-‘Alim, the All-Knowing.
He is As-Sami’, the All-Hearing.
When you understand who Allah is, your worship begins to feel different.
MAKE THE QUR’AN PERSONAL
Do not treat the Qur’an as something you only read because you have to.
Read it with the intention of receiving guidance.
Ask yourself: “What is Allah teaching me here?”
“What does this verse ask me to change?”
“How can I apply this to my life?”
Even a few verses understood and acted upon can have a greater effect on your heart than reading many pages without reflection.
REMEMBER ALLAH THROUGHOUT YOUR DAY
Your relationship with Allah should not exist only on the prayer mat.
Remember Him while walking.
Say Alhamdulillah when something good happens.
Say Astaghfirullah when you make a mistake.
Make du’a before an important decision.
Thank Allah for food, family, opportunities and even the ordinary things you sometimes overlook.
Allah says: “Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.” Qur’an 13:28
BUILD A RELATIONSHIP, NOT JUST A ROUTINE
Routine is important. Salah, Qur’an and dhikr need consistency.
But behind the routine should be a heart that knows why it is worshipping.
Do not simply ask, “Did I pray today?”
Also ask, “Did my prayer bring me closer to Allah?”
Do not only ask, “Did I read Qur’an?”
Ask, “Did the Qur’an change something in me?”
The closer you become to Allah, the more your choices, character and priorities begin to reflect that relationship.
HEART CHECK
Your deen should not only be something you practise. It should be the relationship that shapes who you are.
