WHEN SALAH BECOMES A BURDEN: HOW DO WE FIND THE JOY AGAIN?

There are times when salah feels easy. You hear the adhan and you are ready to pray. At other times, you may feel tired, distracted, or unmotivated. You know salah is important, but getting up to pray feels like a struggle.

If you have ever felt this way, you are not alone. But when salah begins to feel like a burden, it is important not to run away from it. Instead, we should find our way back to the meaning behind it.

Salah is not simply an obligation we have to complete. It is a meeting between us and Allah.

Allah says: “Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing.”  Qur’an 29:45

REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE STANDING BEFORE

One reason salah can become routine is that we sometimes focus only on finishing the prayer.

We stand, bow, prostrate and finish without thinking deeply about what we are saying.

Try slowing down. Learn the meaning of the surahs and supplications you recite. When you say *Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin*, remember that you are praising the Lord of all worlds.

When you make sujood, remember that you are closest to Allah in that position.

Salah becomes more meaningful when your heart understands what your body is doing.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU FEEL MOTIVATED

A common mistake is thinking, “When I feel closer to Allah, I will pray better.”

Sometimes it works the other way around.

You pray even when you do not feel motivated, and that consistency gradually brings your heart back.

Your feelings may change from day to day, but salah remains your connection with Allah.

PUT AWAY THE DISTRACTIONS

For many young Muslims, the five daily prayers compete with school, work, phones, social media, entertainment and conversations.

Before salah, give yourself a few moments away from your phone. Put it aside. Take your time with wudu. Walk to your prayer space with the intention that you are leaving the distractions of the world for a moment to stand before Allah.

Even a small change in your preparation can change the way you experience salah.

DON’T GIVE UP BECAUSE YOU ARE STRUGGLING

If your salah has become inconsistent, do not allow Shaytan to convince you that there is no point trying again.

Start again.

If you missed prayers, repent and seek guidance on how to make up what is required according to your circumstances. If you have been rushing your prayers, slow down. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back.

The goal is not to become perfect overnight.

The goal is to keep returning to Allah.

YOUR SALAH IS PART OF YOUR IDENTITY

The world may tell you that being young means having fun without limits, following every trend and doing whatever feels good.

Islam gives you a different understanding of youth.

You can be young, ambitious, social and successful while still being a person of salah.

Do not be ashamed of praying. Do not hide your Islam because you want to fit in.

Salah is not holding you back from life. It is helping you live your life with purpose.

FIND THE JOY AGAIN

If salah feels heavy today, do not abandon it.

Come to Allah with your tired heart.

Make wudu. Stand on your prayer mat. Put away your phone. Understand what you are reciting. Make sincere du’a and ask Allah to make salah beloved to you.

HEART CHECK

The prayer you struggle to maintain today may become the very thing that carries you through tomorrow.

Salah is not merely something you do for Allah. It is one of the greatest ways Allah has given you to return to Him.
