AKHLAQ: CHARACTER AND MANNERS IN ISLAM
In Islam, good character is not optional it is essential. The concept of akhlaq refers to a person’s manners, behavior, and moral conduct. It is a reflection of one’s faith and a key measure of a person’s closeness to Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized that one of the main reasons for his mission was to perfect good character. This shows that Islam is not only about worship, but also about how we treat others in our daily lives.
Good character includes honesty, kindness, patience, humility, generosity, and forgiveness. A Muslim is expected to speak truthfully, fulfill promises, respect others, and avoid harming people through words or actions. Even simple acts like smiling, offering help, or speaking gently are considered acts of worship.
Islam teaches believers to control anger, avoid arrogance, and stay away from negative traits such as envy, backbiting, and ظلم (injustice). A person with strong character remains calm in difficulty, forgives when wronged, and responds to evil with good.
Good manners extend to all aspects of life family, neighbors, business dealings, and even interactions with strangers. Islam encourages respect for parents, kindness to children, fairness in trade, and compassion towards the weak and vulnerable.
A person’s character can elevate their status in the sight of Allah. In fact, good character can weigh heavily on the scale of deeds on the Day of Judgment. It is a sign of true faith and sincerity.
Building good character is a lifelong journey. It requires self-awareness, discipline, and constant effort. But with sincerity and reliance on Allah, a person can refine their character and become a source of goodness in the world.
In Islam, akhlaq is not just about being a good person it is about embodying the teachings of Islam in the most beautiful way.
