ENTERING RAMADAN WITH AN UNFINISHED PAST AND A HOPEFUL HEART

Many of us approach Ramadan quietly carrying unfinished business. Old sins we never fully repented from. Promises to Allah we meant to keep but didn’t. Habits we tried to abandon and somehow picked up again. Regrets that resurface every time the moon of Ramadan draws near.

Ramadan does not arrive to shame you for these things.

It arrives because of them.

One of the great misunderstandings about Ramadan is the idea that you must be spiritually “ready” before it begins. That you must be healed, disciplined, focused, and pure. In reality, Ramadan has always been the month Allah sends to people who are not ready—but willing.

The companions of the Prophet ﷺ were not perfect people entering a perfect month. They were striving believers entering a merciful season. That distinction matters.

An unfinished past does not disqualify you from Ramadan. A hardened heart does not lock you out. A long absence from consistency does not make you unwelcome. What matters is not what you bring with you, but why you come.

Allah does not ask you to erase your past before Ramadan. He asks you to turn toward Him during it.

A hopeful heart is heavier on the scale than a clean record. Hope itself is an act of worship. When you believe that Allah can still forgive you, still guide you, still accept you—that belief honors Him. Despair, not sin, is what distances a servant from their Lord.

Ramadan teaches us that transformation is not sudden; it is sincere. The first fast may feel heavy. The first prayer may feel rushed. The first night of Qur’an may feel distracted. That is not failure—that is arrival. Every sincere step taken in Ramadan is recorded, even when it feels clumsy.

Do not wait to feel worthy before you worship. Worship until worthiness grows.

Bring your unfinished past into Ramadan and place it gently before Allah. Speak honestly in your duʿā’. Admit weakness without decorating it. Ask for forgiveness without conditions. Allah already knows your story. What He loves is your return.

And remember this: Ramadan does not demand perfection at the door. It offers mercy inside.

If you stumble during the month, return again. If you miss a night, don’t abandon the next. If your heart feels heavy, let it be heavy in sujūd. Allah is not counting how flawless your Ramadan looks He is watching how often you turn back to Him.

Enter Ramadan as you are, but do not leave it unchanged.

A hopeful heart is enough to begin.
