DO NOT LET MONEY DESTROY YOUR FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

Money is necessary for meeting many of our daily needs. It helps us provide food, education, shelter and other necessities.

However, money can also become a source of disagreement within families.

Arguments over inheritance, loans, business transactions, financial support and shared responsibilities can create bitterness between people who once enjoyed close relationships.

As Muslims, we must learn to handle financial matters with honesty, fairness and fear of Allah.

WEALTH IS A TEST AND A RESPONSIBILITY

Allah says:

“Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward.” Qur’an 64:15

This verse reminds us that wealth is part of the tests of this life.

How we earn it, spend it and treat others in financial matters are all important.

Money should help us fulfil our responsibilities, not become a reason for oppression, dishonesty or the destruction of family relationships.

DO NOT ALLOW GREED TO TAKE OVER

Sometimes, family members become so focused on what they want to receive that they forget the rights of others.

A person may deny a sibling their rightful share, refuse to repay a family loan or take advantage of a relative’s financial difficulties.

Such behaviour can cause lasting damage.

Allah commands justice and the fulfilment of people’s rights. Family relationships do not give anyone permission to cheat, exploit or withhold what belongs to another person.

BE CLEAR ABOUT FINANCIAL AGREEMENTS

Many family disagreements begin because people make financial arrangements without clear communication.

Someone lends money without discussing repayment. Another person contributes to a business without agreeing on how profits will be shared.

When misunderstandings arise, relationships suffer.

Whenever possible:
– Be clear about whether money is a gift or a loan.
– Agree on repayment arrangements.
– Keep accurate records of important transactions.
– Do not make financial promises you cannot fulfil.
– Treat everyone’s rights fairly.
– Seek appropriate guidance when inheritance matters arise.

Clarity can prevent unnecessary conflict.

FAMILY LOVE SHOULD NOT DEPEND ON FINANCIAL BENEFITS

Do not only remember relatives when you need financial assistance.

Check on them, show concern and maintain relationships even when there is no money involved.

Likewise, do not measure someone’s love for you only by how much they can provide.

People have different financial abilities. A relative who cannot support you financially may still care deeply about you.

HEART CHECK

Wealth comes and goes, but the pain caused by dishonesty and unfair treatment can remain for years.

Earn your money through halal means, fulfil financial responsibilities and respect the rights of others.

Do not allow the pursuit of wealth to make you lose the people and values that matter.

REFLECTION: Have you ever allowed a financial disagreement to affect a family relationship? What could have been handled differently?

DU’A: O Allah, grant us halal provision, protect our families from greed and injustice, and help us handle financial matters with honesty and fairness. Ameen.
