CLEANLINESS, DIGNITY AND THE MUSLIM YOUTH
Cleanliness is an important part of a Muslim’s daily life. It affects our worship, health, appearance, living environment, and interactions with other people.
Yet cleanliness is sometimes treated as something that matters only when a person is going out, attending an event, or preparing to meet someone important.
Islam encourages Muslims to develop habits of cleanliness and care that extend into everyday life.
For young Muslims, learning these habits is not simply about looking presentable. It is about respecting the blessings Allah has provided, maintaining personal dignity, and being considerate toward others.
1. CLEANLINESS HAS A SPECIAL PLACE IN ISLAM
Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” Qur’an 2:222
This verse highlights the importance of purification in Islam.
Ritual purification is necessary for certain acts of worship, while general cleanliness is also important for personal hygiene and everyday life.
Muslims learn to perform wudu before prayer under the relevant conditions, maintain cleanliness, and pay attention to matters of purification.
These practices remind us that caring for cleanliness is not an unimportant detail. It is part of living responsibly as a Muslim.
#2. TAKE CARE OF YOUR PERSONAL HYGIENE
Personal hygiene involves habits that help keep your body clean and reduce the spread of illness.
Young Muslims should develop consistent routines that include:
* Bathing regularly according to their needs and circumstances.
* Washing their hands, especially before eating and after using the toilet.
* Brushing their teeth and maintaining oral hygiene.
* Wearing clean clothes when possible.
* Keeping fingernails clean and trimmed.
* Maintaining appropriate menstrual hygiene where relevant.
* Learning the rules of wudu and ghusl correctly.
These habits should be practiced for their own sake, not only when someone else is watching.
If you have limited access to water, soap, or laundry facilities, do the best you reasonably can with the resources available. Cleanliness should not become a reason to shame people who face difficult circumstances.
3. KEEP YOUR CLOTHES AND SURROUNDINGS CLEAN
Personal cleanliness is connected to how we care for the spaces we use.
A young person can contribute to a cleaner environment by putting rubbish in appropriate bins, washing dishes after use, keeping school materials organized, and helping maintain shared spaces.
At school, avoid leaving waste under desks or damaging public facilities. At home, help keep the bathroom, kitchen, and sleeping area reasonably clean.
If you use a shared space, remember that other people will use it too.
Clean surroundings can improve comfort, support hygiene, and demonstrate consideration for those who live or work with you.
4. CLEANLINESS AND WORSHIP
Muslims should understand the difference between ordinary cleanliness and ritual purity.
For example, wudu and ghusl have specific Islamic rules. Merely taking a bath does not automatically replace every form of ritual purification in every circumstance.
Similarly, not every stain or substance is treated the same way in Islamic jurisprudence.
Young Muslims should learn these rules from reliable Islamic sources or qualified teachers rather than relying entirely on assumptions.
If you have questions about a particular situation, seek appropriate guidance.
5. DO NOT CONFUSE CLEANLINESS WITH ARROGANCE
Taking care of your appearance can be a good thing, but it should not become a reason to look down on others.
Some people have limited money, difficult living conditions, disabilities, or health challenges that affect their appearance.
You should not mock someone because their clothes are old, their shoes are worn, or they cannot afford expensive hygiene products.
There is a difference between encouraging good hygiene and humiliating someone.
Islam teaches dignity and good character. Cleanliness should encourage responsibility, not pride.
6. CLEANLINESS ALSO INCLUDES YOUR ENVIRONMENT
A person may maintain a neat appearance but still throw rubbish into the street, block drainage channels, or leave waste in shared spaces.
Responsible cleanliness extends beyond the individual.
Dispose of rubbish properly. Avoid pouring harmful substances into places where they may contaminate water. Keep shared areas reasonably tidy, and contribute to community cleanliness when you can.
These actions can help protect other people and the environment.
7. MAKE CLEANLINESS A DAILY HABIT
You do not need to wait until your room becomes messy or your clothes become uncomfortable before taking action.
Develop a simple routine.
Make your bed when practical. Put items back after using them. Wash your hands regularly. Keep personal hygiene items in an accessible place. Set aside time to wash clothes and clean your surroundings.
Small habits are easier to maintain when they become part of your daily routine.
If you live in a crowded home or share facilities with others, focus on what you can reasonably control and cooperate respectfully with those around you.
HEART CHECK
Dear young Muslim, cleanliness is not merely about appearance. It is connected to worship, personal dignity, health, and consideration for others.
Learn the practices of purification required for worship. Maintain your personal hygiene, keep your surroundings clean, and avoid making people feel inferior because of their circumstances.
You do not need expensive products or luxurious facilities to begin developing responsible habits. Start with the resources available to you and remain consistent.
Let your cleanliness reflect gratitude, responsibility, and respect for yourself and the people around you.
May Allah help us maintain purity, care for our bodies and surroundings, and develop habits that please Him. Ameen.
