WHAT INVALIDATES TAYAMMUM?
Islam provides ways to perform purification even when water is unavailable or cannot safely be used. One of these is tayammum, a form of dry purification.
But once you have performed tayammum, can you continue praying with it indefinitely? What causes it to become invalid?
Understanding these rules helps Muslims worship with confidence.
WHAT IS TAYAMMUM?
Tayammum is a form of purification using clean earth or an appropriate earthly surface, according to the relevant scholarly rulings, when water is unavailable or its use is genuinely harmful.
Allah says:
*“And if you do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it.”* — Qur’an 5:6
Tayammum is a concession from Allah. It allows a Muslim to perform purification when the normal use of water is not possible under the conditions recognised in Islamic law.
WHAT INVALIDATES TAYAMMUM?
1. ANYTHING THAT INVALIDATES WUDU
If you perform tayammum in place of wudu, then something happens that would normally invalidate wudu—such as passing urine, passing wind or using the toilet—your tayammum is generally invalidated as well.
You must perform the appropriate purification again before praying.
2. FINDING WATER WHEN IT BECOMES POSSIBLE TO USE IT
If you performed tayammum because water was unavailable and you subsequently find water that you can safely use, tayammum generally no longer serves as a substitute for wudu or ghusl.
The precise ruling can depend on when the water becomes available and whether you have already begun or completed your prayer. Ask a knowledgeable scholar about a specific situation.
3. THE REASON FOR THE CONCESSION ENDS
If you performed tayammum because using water was medically harmful, and the reason for that restriction ends, you should return to the normal form of purification when it is safe and required.
For example, someone who could not safely wash an injury may need to reassess their purification once it has healed.
DOES TAYAMMUM AUTOMATICALLY EXPIRE AFTER ONE PRAYER?
There are differences among scholars concerning the use of one tayammum for multiple obligatory prayers. It is not accurate to say that every tayammum automatically expires simply because one prayer has been completed.
Follow the guidance of a reliable scholar or the school of jurisprudence you practise.
WHAT SHOULD YOU REMEMBER?
* Tayammum is a valid concession when its conditions are met.
* Things that invalidate wudu generally invalidate tayammum performed in its place.
* If water becomes available and can safely be used, return to water purification as required.
* Do not repeat tayammum unnecessarily because of doubts.
HEART CHECK
Allah has made purification an important part of worship, but He has also provided concessions when circumstances make normal purification difficult. Learn the rules and worship with confidence rather than fear.
