CAN YOU MAKE WUDU WHILE WEARING SOCKS?

Imagine that you have made wudu, put on your socks and later need to renew your wudu. Must you remove your socks and wash your feet again?

Many Muslims ask this question, especially when they are at school, at work or travelling.

Islamic jurisprudence allows wiping over certain footwear, including socks, under specified conditions. However, scholars differ over which types of socks qualify.

WHAT IS MASAH OVER SOCKS?

Masah means wiping over the footwear with wet hands during wudu instead of washing the feet, when the relevant conditions are met.

There is authentic evidence that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wiped over his leather footwear, known as khuffayn.

Scholars have discussed whether and under what conditions the same ruling applies to ordinary socks.

WHAT CONDITIONS MUST BE MET?

Although details differ among schools of jurisprudence, commonly discussed conditions include the following:

1. YOU MUST HAVE PUT THEM ON AFTER PURIFICATION

A common condition is that you put on the socks after completing a valid wudu in which you washed your feet.

You cannot simply put on socks over feet that have not been washed and then wipe over them as though you had already completed wudu.

2. THE SOCKS MUST QUALIFY UNDER THE RULING YOU FOLLOW

Scholars differ on the types of socks that may be wiped over. Some require qualities such as durability and the ability to remain on the feet while walking, while other scholars permit wiping over a wider range of socks.

Therefore, do not assume that every thin or transparent sock qualifies according to every school.

3. THE ALLOWED PERIOD MUST NOT HAVE EXPIRED

For residents, the commonly cited period is one day and one night. For travellers, it is three days and three nights.

These periods are supported by hadith reports concerning wiping over footwear. Scholars discuss how the timing is calculated and how the rules apply to different circumstances, so follow reliable guidance for your school.

HOW DO YOU WIPE OVER YOUR SOCKS?

When the socks qualify and the conditions are met:

1. Make the intention to perform wudu.
2. Wash the other required parts of wudu.
3. Instead of washing the feet, wipe over the upper surfaces of the qualifying socks with wet hands.

Wiping the soles alone is not the prescribed method commonly taught for masah over footwear.

WHEN MUST YOU REMOVE YOUR SOCKS?

You may need to remove them and wash your feet if the conditions for wiping no longer apply—for example, when the permitted period has expired or the socks no longer qualify.

Also, if you need ghusl because of major ritual impurity, wiping over socks does not replace the required washing of the feet during ghusl.

HEART CHECK

Islam offers practical concessions, but those concessions have rules. Learn the conditions that apply to your school of jurisprudence so that your wudu is performed correctly and you can pray with peace of mind.
