BEFORE YOU POST: WILL THIS BENEFIT YOU?

You are about to upload a picture.

You want to share a video.

You have a screenshot of someone’s private conversation.

Or perhaps you have something embarrassing about another person that you think your followers will find funny.

Before you click “POST,” take a moment to think.

Is everything that can be posted worth posting?

Social media makes it easy to share something within seconds. But once a post spreads, deleting it may not undo the harm it has caused.

Allah says: “Do not follow what you have no sure knowledge of. Indeed, all of them—your hearing, sight, and heart—will be questioned.” Qur’an 17:36 – translation of the meaning.

YOUR ONLINE ACTIONS MATTER

Sometimes young people behave as though the internet is separate from real life.

They insult people in comment sections, spread rumors, share indecent content and expose other people’s mistakes.

Some do these things because they want likes, views or followers.

But popularity does not make every action acceptable.

A post can entertain people and still hurt someone.

A video can go viral and still contain something sinful.

A screenshot can look interesting and still violate someone’s privacy.

Your online behaviour is part of your character. Being behind a screen does not remove your responsibility before Allah.

ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS BEFORE POSTING

1. Is it true?

Do not spread information simply because someone sent it to you. Verify information before sharing it.

2. Is it respectful?

Would you be comfortable if someone shared the same thing about you?

3. Is it appropriate?

Does the content go against your Islamic values or encourage something harmful?

4. Could it hurt someone?

Think about whether your post could humiliate, expose or endanger another person.

5. Why am I posting it?

Are you sharing something beneficial, or are you only looking for attention?

USE YOUR PLATFORM FOR GOOD

You can share reminders about Allah.

You can encourage someone who is struggling.

You can teach a useful skill.

You can promote a halal business.

You can speak against bullying and injustice.

You can use your platform to spread knowledge and kindness.

You do not have to post every thought that comes into your mind. Sometimes, choosing not to post is the wiser decision.

YOUR FINGERS CAN LEAVE A DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

Before posting, remember that your actions have consequences, whether they happen offline or online.

Do not allow the desire for attention to make you careless with your deen.

HEART CHECK

Before you post, pause. Before you share, verify. Before you comment, think.

May Allah guide us to use our words, platforms and influence in ways that please Him. Ameen.
