COMING LATE TO WORK: IS IT AN ISLAMIC TRUST ISSUE?

Have you ever arrived late to work and thought, “It is only a few minutes. Does it really matter?”
Punctuality may seem like a small matter, but when you have agreed to work at a particular time, keeping that agreement is part of fulfilling your responsibility.
Islam teaches Muslims to be trustworthy, honest and fair in their dealings.
WHAT DOES ISLAM SAY ABOUT FULFILLING AGREEMENTS?
Allah says:
“O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.” — Qur’an 5:1
An employment agreement is a trust between an employer and a worker. If you have agreed to resume at 8 a.m., for example, you should make a reasonable effort to arrive at that time and be ready to work.
Repeated lateness without a valid reason may mean you are not fulfilling the terms of your employment.
WHY DOES PUNCTUALITY MATTER?
1. YOUR EMPLOYER IS PAYING FOR YOUR WORK
When you accept a job, you accept certain responsibilities. Deliberately arriving late while expecting the same level of trust and compensation can be unfair.
2. YOUR LATENESS MAY AFFECT OTHERS
Your colleagues may have to cover your duties, customers may wait longer, or important tasks may be delayed.
3. HONESTY MATTERS
If you arrive late, do not lie about your arrival time or falsely claim that you completed work you missed.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE A GENUINE REASON?
Traffic, illness, family emergencies and other unexpected circumstances can happen. Islam recognises that not every delay is deliberate.
If you know you will be late:
* Inform your supervisor as soon as reasonably possible.
* Explain the situation honestly.
* Follow your workplace’s attendance policy.
* Make arrangements to prevent avoidable lateness in the future.
An occasional unavoidable delay is not the same as deliberately neglecting your responsibilities.
WHAT IF YOUR EMPLOYER IS UNFAIR?
Being punctual does not mean you must accept exploitation. If an employer imposes unreasonable conditions or treats workers unjustly, seek a fair resolution and appropriate advice. Both employers and employees have responsibilities.
HEART CHECK
Your job is an amanah—a trust. Be honest with your time, respect the agreements you make and remember that good character should be visible in the workplace as well as in the mosque
