THE PROPHET ﷺ AND THE YOUTH WHO MADE MISTAKES

YOUR MISTAKE DOES NOT HAVE TO DEFINE YOUR FUTURE

Have you ever made a mistake and felt that you were no longer good enough to be close to Allah?

Perhaps you fell into a sin you had promised yourself you would never repeat. Maybe you neglected your salah, followed the wrong friends, or made a decision you now regret.

You may even have thought, “How can I call myself a good Muslim when I keep making mistakes?”

If you have ever felt this way, remember that Islam does not teach us to give up on ourselves because we have sinned.

The life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ shows us the importance of guiding people toward what is right rather than treating those who struggle as though they have no hope.

Consider the young man who approached the Prophet ﷺ seeking permission to commit zina. As discussed in the previous article, the Prophet ﷺ corrected him with wisdom and compassion rather than humiliating him.

This teaches us that people who struggle with wrong desires still need guidance, support, and reminders of Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ also taught that all human beings make mistakes and that the best of those who make mistakes are those who repent.

This teaching is reported in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi.

The message is clear: making a mistake is serious, but refusing to repent or believing that you can never change can make the situation worse.

ALLAH’S MERCY IS GREATER THAN YOUR SIN

Sometimes, Shaytan tries to use our mistakes to push us further away from Allah.

After committing a sin, a person may think:

“Allah will never forgive me.”

“I have made too many mistakes.”

“There is no point in praying anymore.”

“I might as well continue because I have already failed.”

These thoughts can lead a person away from repentance.

But Allah tells us in the Qur’an:

*”Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.'”*

— Qur’an 39:53, excerpt.

This verse offers hope to those who sincerely turn back to Allah.

No matter how serious your mistakes have been, do not abandon salah, stop making du’a, or assume that repentance is pointless.

Turn back to Allah sincerely.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOU MAKE A MISTAKE?

1. Acknowledge your mistake.

Do not pretend that something wrong is right simply because you want to continue doing it.

2. Repent sincerely to Allah.

Ask Allah for forgiveness, regret the sin, and make a sincere intention to stop. If you have violated another person’s rights, take appropriate steps to restore those rights.

3. Identify what led you to the mistake.

Was it harmful company, uncontrolled anger, loneliness, a particular online habit, or an environment that encouraged wrongdoing?

Understanding the cause can help you avoid repeating the mistake.

4. Take practical steps toward change.

If certain friends repeatedly encourage you to sin, establish boundaries. If particular online activities lead you toward wrongdoing, change your habits and limit your exposure.

5. Do not give up when you struggle.

If you fall into sin again, repent again. Do not deliberately treat repentance as permission to continue sinning, but do not allow a setback to convince you that change is impossible.

DO NOT USE YOUR MISTAKES TO LABEL YOURSELF

There is a difference between saying, “I did something wrong,” and saying, “I am beyond hope.”

The first allows you to acknowledge your actions and seek improvement. The second can make you feel trapped in your past.

You are responsible for your choices, but you can also choose to repent, seek knowledge, improve your habits, and move toward a better life.

HEART CHECK

The Prophet ﷺ guided people with wisdom and compassion. His example reminds us that people need sincere advice and opportunities to correct themselves.

If you have made mistakes, do not run away from Allah. Run back to Him through sincere repentance.

You do not have to remain the person you were yesterday. With Allah’s help, you can begin making better choices today.

May Allah forgive our sins, strengthen our hearts, and make us among those who sincerely repent to Him. Ameen.
