FASTING ON MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS: WHY DO MUSLIMS DO IT?
Ramadan is not the only time Muslims can fast. There are voluntary fasts throughout the year that allow us to increase our worship and strengthen our relationship with Allah.
Among them are fasting on Mondays and Thursdays.
WHY MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was keen to fast on these days.
It is reported that he ﷺ said: “Deeds are presented on Mondays and Thursdays, and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.” — Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 747
This teaches us that voluntary fasting can be an opportunity to seek Allah’s pleasure and increase our good deeds.
Monday also has a special significance. When the Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on Monday, he explained that it was the day on which he was born and the day revelation was sent down to him. — Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1162
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
1. IT HELPS YOU DEVELOP SELF-CONTROL
Fasting teaches you to control your desires, avoid sinful behaviour and become more mindful of Allah.
2. IT BUILDS CONSISTENCY IN WORSHIP
You do not have to wait until Ramadan to improve your relationship with Allah. Voluntary fasting gives you opportunities to worship throughout the year.
3. IT REMINDS YOU OF ALLAH
When you willingly leave food and drink for Allah’s sake, you practise sincerity and obedience.
HOW CAN A YOUNG MUSLIM START?
If you are able to fast safely, you can begin with one Monday or Thursday and gradually build consistency.
* Make your intention to fast for Allah.
* Eat suhoor if possible.
* Avoid lying, backbiting, insults and other sinful behaviour.
* Break your fast at sunset.
* Do not neglect your obligatory responsibilities.
Remember that voluntary fasting should not harm your health. Those who are ill or have a medical reason to avoid fasting should seek appropriate guidance.
HEART CHECK
You do not have to wait for Ramadan to become closer to Allah. One voluntary fast, sincerely observed, can be part of a beautiful journey of faith. May Allah accept our acts of worship. Ameen.
