SUJUD AS-SAHW: WHAT IS IT AND WHEN DO I PERFORM IT?

Have you ever been praying and suddenly wondered, “Did I forget something?”
Perhaps you are unsure whether you prayed three or four rak’ahs. Maybe you forgot a part of the prayer or made a mistake while following the imam.
Don’t panic! Islam provides guidance for mistakes caused by forgetfulness during salah.
One important part of this guidance is Sujud as-Sahw.
WHAT IS SUJUD AS-SAHW?
Sujud as-Sahw means the prostration of forgetfulness. It is performed to address certain mistakes or omissions that happen during salah.
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) sometimes performed prostrations of forgetfulness when mistakes occurred in prayer.
This teaches us that making an accidental mistake during salah is something for which Islam provides guidance.
WHEN MIGHT YOU NEED SUJUD AS-SAHW?
Sujud as-Sahw may be required or prescribed in situations such as:
* Forgetting a particular part of the prayer.
* Being uncertain about the number of rak’ahs prayed.
* Accidentally adding something to the prayer.
* Making certain mistakes while following the imam.
However, not every mistake requires Sujud as-Sahw. The correct response depends on what happened and the school of Islamic jurisprudence being followed.
For example, forgetting a pillar of salah, such as a required prostration, may require you to do more than simply perform Sujud as-Sahw.
WHEN SHOULD YOU PERFORM IT?
Scholars differ on some details concerning whether Sujud as-Sahw should be performed before or after the final salam.
The ruling can also depend on the type of mistake.
Therefore, young Muslims should learn the method taught by a knowledgeable teacher or scholar rather than assuming that every situation has the same solution.
WHAT IF YOU KEEP DOUBTING YOUR PRAYER?
Sometimes a person repeatedly wonders whether they made a mistake, even when there is no clear reason to believe that they did.
This can become a source of unnecessary anxiety.
Do not repeatedly restart your salah because of every passing thought. Learn the rules and avoid allowing baseless doubts to control your worship.
Allah does not require you to follow every uncertain thought that enters your mind.
HEART CHECK
Salah is important, and learning how to correct mistakes is part of learning to pray properly.
Don’t let the fear of making a mistake stop you from praying. Learn the rules, ask questions and worship Allah with confidence.
