TAKING CREDIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE’S WORK: WHAT DOES ISLAM SAY?
Imagine working hard on a school project, only for another student to present it as their own. How would you feel?
Now imagine being the person who takes credit for work they did not do.
Islam teaches honesty, fairness and respect for other people’s efforts. Taking credit for another person’s work violates these values.
WHAT DOES ISLAM TEACH ABOUT HONESTY?
Allah says: “And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].” — Qur’an 2:42
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also said:
“Whoever deceives us is not one of us.”
— Sahih Muslim, Hadith 101
These teachings remind Muslims that deception is not acceptable behaviour.
WHAT DOES TAKING CREDIT FOR SOMEONE’S WORK LOOK LIKE?
It can happen in many ways:
Submitting another student’s assignment as your own.
Presenting a friend’s ideas without acknowledging them.
Taking credit for a group project you did not contribute to.
Copying someone’s article and publishing it under your name.
Claiming you designed something that another person created.
These actions are dishonest because they create a false impression about who did the work.
WHY IS IT WRONG?
1. IT IS DECEPTION
You are allowing others to believe something that is not true.
2. IT IS UNFAIR TO THE PERSON WHO DID THE WORK
Someone else spent time, effort and possibly money producing the work. Taking the credit denies them proper recognition.
3. IT PREVENTS YOU FROM LEARNING
When you repeatedly claim other people’s work, you miss the opportunity to develop your own skills and knowledge.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE IT?
Do not allow embarrassment to stop you from correcting your mistake.
Acknowledge the truth where reasonably possible.
Give proper credit to the person who did the work.
Correct the record if you misled a teacher, employer or audience.
Seek Allah’s forgiveness and make a sincere effort not to repeat the behaviour.
If the act caused someone financial loss or violated their rights, take reasonable steps to address the harm.
HOW CAN YOU GIVE PROPER CREDIT?
When using another person’s ideas, words, designs or research, follow the relevant rules for acknowledgement. If you work with a team, be honest about what each person contributed.
Giving credit does not make your work less valuable. It shows integrity.
FINAL REMINDER
Your name should be associated with work you can honestly claim. Success gained through deception may look attractive for a moment, but honesty builds trust that lasts.
