WARQAH IBN NAWFAL AND THE BEGINNING OF PROPHETHOOD

WHEN EVERYTHING FELT UNEXPECTED, ALLAH SENT REASSURANCE

Imagine experiencing something so extraordinary that you return home frightened, unsure of what has happened to you. Who would you turn to for reassurance?

This was part of the experience of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when the Angel Jibril عليه السلام first came to him in the Cave of Hira.

After receiving the first revelation, the Prophet ﷺ returned to his wife, Khadijah رضي الله عنها, trembling and asking to be covered. Khadijah رضي الله عنها comforted him and reminded him of his excellent character, explaining that Allah would never disgrace him.

She then took him to her relative, *Warqah ibn Nawfal*, who had knowledge of earlier scriptures.

After listening to what had happened, Warqah recognized that the being who had come to Muhammad ﷺ was the same bearer of revelation who had come to Musa عليه السلام. He explained that Muhammad ﷺ had encountered the Angel of revelation and would become the Messenger of his people.

Warqah’s words helped the Prophet ﷺ understand the extraordinary experience he had undergone.

This event teaches us that seeking knowledge and speaking to trustworthy, knowledgeable people can help us understand difficult experiences.

WHAT CAN YOUNG MUSLIMS LEARN?

1. Seek knowledge when you don’t understand something.

Don’t allow confusion to push you toward misinformation. Seek guidance from reliable Islamic scholars and knowledgeable people.

2. Appreciate people who support you.

Khadijah رضي الله عنها did not dismiss the Prophet’s ﷺ fear. She comforted him and helped him find reassurance.

3. Choose your advisers wisely.

Not everyone has the knowledge or wisdom to guide you. Seek advice from people who are sincere, knowledgeable and trustworthy.

4. Don’t underestimate the power of reassurance.

Sometimes, a few wise and comforting words can help someone face a difficult situation.
