Have you ever said something and immediately wished you could take it back?
Maybe you insulted someone.
Maybe you revealed someone’s secret.
Maybe you sent an angry message.
Maybe you made a joke about someone’s appearance.
Maybe you spread something you weren’t sure was true.
Words can leave your mouth in seconds, but their consequences can last much longer.
Allah reminds us:
“He does not utter a word except that with him is an observer prepared to record it.” Qur’an 50:18
EVERY WORD MATTERS
Sometimes young people think:
“It’s only a joke.”
“Nobody will remember.”
“I didn’t mean it.”
But Islam teaches us to take our words seriously.
Your words can encourage someone.
Your words can break someone’s confidence.
Your words can cause an argument.
Your words can spread a rumour.
Your words can repair a friendship.
Your words can even become a source of reward when you use them for good.
THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK
Before saying something, ask yourself:
Is it true?
Is it necessary?
Is it kind?
Would I say it if the person were standing beside me?
Would I be comfortable with this statement being recorded among my deeds?
If the answer is no, silence may be better.
BE CAREFUL ONLINE TOO
Your words don’t stop being accountable because you typed them instead of saying them.
A WhatsApp message.
A comment.
A caption.
A voice note.
A repost.
A private chat.
All of these can have consequences.
Don’t use your phone as a place to say things you would never say face-to-face.
USE YOUR WORDS FOR GOOD
Imagine if your tongue became a source of benefit.
Say kind words to your parents.
Encourage your friends.
Defend someone who is being mocked.
Give sincere advice.
Say “Alhamdulillah.”
Say “SubhanAllah.”
Make du’a for people.
Apologise when you are wrong.

And remember that sometimes not speaking is itself an act of wisdom. Your tongue is small, but what comes from it can have a huge impact. Before you speak, pause because, once your words leave your mouth, you may not be able to take them back and Allah is aware of every word.
