When people hear the word Hijab, many immediately think about a headscarf.
But Hijab is bigger than a piece of cloth.
It is connected to modesty, dignity and boundaries.
HIJAB IS AN ACT OF WORSHIP
For Muslim women, observing the Islamic requirements of Hijab is part of obedience to Allah.
Allah says:
> “And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity and not expose their adornment…”Qur’an 24:31
The purpose isn’t simply to follow a cultural fashion.
It is an act of worship.
HIJAB IS NOT ONLY ABOUT WOMEN
Islam also commands believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity.
So modesty isn’t something Islam places entirely on women.
**Men have responsibilities too.**
A man cannot blame a woman for his own decision to look at something inappropriate.
WHAT ABOUT CLOTHING?
Islamic modesty involves appropriate covering and clothing that meets the requirements of Shari’ah.
It also involves avoiding clothing that is excessively revealing or designed to expose what should be covered.
But modesty doesn’t mean Muslims must look unattractive, unclean or old-fashioned.
You can dress neatly.
You can have personal style.
You can enjoy permissible fashion.
The key is keeping within Islamic boundaries.
HIJAB IS ALSO ABOUT CHARACTER
A person can cover properly but still insult everyone around them.
Another person may dress modestly but behave arrogantly.
Islam teaches us that outward modesty should be accompanied by good character.
Be modest in your speech.
Be respectful.
Avoid unnecessary flirtation.
Don’t use social media to expose what should remain private.
DON’T USE HIJAB TO JUDGE PEOPLE
If someone is struggling with Hijab, don’t mock them.
Advise with wisdom.
Encourage rather than humiliate.
Every person has their own journey toward Allah.
HEART CHECK
Hijab is not meant to make you invisible. It is meant to help you live with dignity and obedience to Allah. Don’t let social media convince you that modesty is outdated. Modesty never goes out of style when it is connected to faith.
