How do you treat children when they make mistakes?

Do you shout at them immediately?

Do you embarrass them in front of others?

Or do you correct them with patience and kindness?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever does not show mercy to our young and does not recognize the rights of our elders is not one of us.”
— Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi

This hadith teaches us that mercy is an important part of Islamic character.

 

CHILDREN NEED GUIDANCE, NOT CONSTANT HUMILIATION

Children are still learning.

They will make mistakes.

They may forget what you taught them. They may ask the same question repeatedly. They may sometimes behave badly.

That does not mean they should be treated without kindness.

Correction is necessary, but correction should not destroy their confidence or make them afraid of everyone around them.

 

YOUNG PEOPLE ALSO NEED MERCY

This lesson is not only for adults.

If you are a teenager or young adult, you can practice mercy too.

Be patient with your younger siblings.

Don’t laugh when they make mistakes.

Don’t bully someone because they are smaller, quieter or less confident.

Don’t use someone’s weakness as entertainment.

Instead, become the person who makes others feel safe.

 

MERCY IS NOT WEAKNESS

Being gentle does not mean allowing wrong behaviour.

You can correct someone without insulting them.

You can disagree without humiliating them.

You can discipline without hatred.

You can tell someone they are wrong while still treating them with dignity.

The Prophet ﷺ was a beautiful example of mercy and kindness.

 

A QUESTION FOR EVERYONE

When people remember you, will they remember how you made them feel?

Will they remember your kindness?

Your patience?

Your encouragement?

Your willingness to help?

Or will they remember your insults and harsh words?

Islam teaches us to build hearts that are merciful.

So today, choose mercy.

Be kind to the child who looks up to you.

Be patient with your younger sibling.

Encourage someone who is struggling.
