“It’s just ₦500.” “I only do it for fun.” “What if I win?” “I don’t even bet every day.”
These are some of the things young people say about betting and gambling. With sports-betting apps, online casinos and games of chance becoming easily accessible, it can seem normal.
But as Muslims, the question isn’t simply: “Can I make money from it?”
The question is:“Is the way I am making this money pleasing to Allah?”
WHAT IS GAMBLING?
Gambling involves putting money or something valuable at risk with the possibility of gaining or losing based largely on chance.
Allah clearly warns believers about gambling:
“O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.” Qur’an 5:90
The instruction is clear: Muslims are commanded to stay away from gambling.
“BUT WHAT IF I WIN?”
Winning doesn’t make something halal.
If the method of earning is prohibited, the money gained through that prohibited activity does not become permissible simply because you won.
This is why a Muslim should not look only at the result. The method matters too.
WHAT ABOUT SPORTS BETTING?
You might love football, basketball or another sport.
Supporting your favourite team is one thing.
Putting money on the outcome and risking your money in order to win more is another.
Whether you call it “stake,” “prediction,” “sure odds,” or “just a small bet,” changing the name doesn’t change the nature of the activity.
WHY IS GAMBLING SO DANGEROUS?
It can start small.
₦500 today.
₦1,000 tomorrow.
Then the person loses and thinks:
“I need to win back what I lost.”
That can lead to bigger risks, financial problems and even dishonesty.
Islam protects a person’s wealth by closing doors that can lead to serious harm.
DEAR YOUNG MUSLIM…
Don’t let the promise of quick money make you forget the value of halal income.
You may not become rich overnight through halal work.
But money earned lawfully comes with something betting cannot guarantee: peace of mind and blessings.
HEART CHECK
Don’t chase quick money at the expense of your Deen. What Allah has prohibited is never worth sacrificing your relationship with Him for.
