WHY SEEKING KNOWLEDGE IS AN ACT OF RESPONSIBILITY

Knowledge is one of the greatest blessings Allah has given humanity.

It helps us understand the world, make informed decisions and recognise the difference between what is beneficial and what is harmful.

As Muslims, seeking knowledge should not be limited to attending school or obtaining certificates. We also have a responsibility to learn about our religion so that we can worship Allah correctly and live according to His guidance.

ALLAH TEACHES US TO ASK FOR MORE KNOWLEDGE

Allah says:

“And say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'” Qur’an 20:114

This is a beautiful supplication that reminds us that knowledge is something we should continue seeking.

No matter how much a person has learnt, there is always more to understand.

A Muslim should not become arrogant because of what they know or assume that learning is only necessary during childhood.

Learning is a lifelong responsibility.

KNOWLEDGE HELPS YOU PRACTISE YOUR DEEN CORRECTLY

Imagine someone who wants to perform Salah but does not know its essential requirements. Or someone who wants to fast but does not understand the basic rules of fasting.

Good intentions are important, but we must also learn how to carry out our acts of worship correctly.

Every Muslim should make an effort to learn the knowledge that is necessary for their religious obligations.

This includes understanding the basics of purification, Salah, fasting, halal and haram, and other matters relevant to their circumstances.

When you do not understand something about Islam, ask a knowledgeable and trustworthy person rather than relying on rumours or random social media posts.

DO NOT BE ASHAMED TO LEARN

Some people avoid asking questions because they are afraid of being laughed at.

Others pretend to understand religious matters because they do not want to appear ignorant.

But there is nothing shameful about seeking knowledge.

If you do not understand a verse, ask for an explanation. If you are confused about a ruling, seek clarification from qualified scholars. If you make a mistake, use it as an opportunity to learn.

The important thing is to seek reliable knowledge with sincerity and humility.

KNOWLEDGE SHOULD REFLECT IN YOUR ACTIONS

Learning about Islam is not simply about memorising information or quoting verses.

The knowledge you acquire should influence how you worship Allah, treat people and make decisions.

If you learn about honesty, practise honesty. If you learn about the rights of parents, make an effort to fulfil them. If you learn about the importance of Salah, work towards establishing it.

Knowledge becomes more meaningful when it leads to beneficial action.

MAKE LEARNING PART OF YOUR DAILY LIFE

You can develop a simple learning routine:

– Read a portion of the Qur’an and study its meaning.
– Learn the authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
– Attend reliable Islamic lessons.
– Ask questions when you do not understand something.
– Read beneficial books from trustworthy scholars.
– Share knowledge responsibly, without speaking about Islam beyond what you know.

You do not have to learn everything in one day. Begin with what you need to know and continue gradually.

HEART CHECK

Do not allow your education to end with your certificates. Continue learning about your deen, improving your understanding and applying what you discover. A knowledgeable Muslim should become more humble, responsible and conscious of Allah.
