WHO CAN WASH THE BODY OF THE DECEASED IN ISLAM?

When a Muslim dies, the community has important responsibilities towards the deceased. These include washing the body, shrouding it, performing the janazah prayer and arranging burial.

But who is allowed to wash the body of a deceased Muslim?

Islam provides guidelines for this sacred responsibility.

WHY IS WASHING THE DECEASED IMPORTANT?

Washing the body of a deceased Muslim (ghusl al-mayyit) is generally a communal obligation (fard kifayah). This means that if a sufficient number of qualified people fulfil it, the rest of the community is no longer sinful for leaving it undone.

The washing should be carried out respectfully, preserving the dignity and privacy of the deceased.

WHO CAN WASH THE BODY?

1. A DECEASED MAN

As a general rule, men wash the bodies of deceased men. His spouse may also wash him according to the recognised scholarly rulings.

2. A DECEASED WOMAN

As a general rule, women wash the bodies of deceased women. Her husband may also wash her according to the recognised scholarly rulings.

3. A CHILD

The rules concerning children can differ depending on their age, sex and whether they have reached puberty. Families should consult a knowledgeable scholar or experienced funeral team when unsure.

4. WHAT IF NO SUITABLE PERSON IS AVAILABLE?

If the usual person to perform the washing is unavailable, the family or community should seek guidance from a knowledgeable scholar or a qualified Muslim funeral service. The appropriate procedure can depend on the deceased’s circumstances and the applicable school of jurisprudence.

HOW SHOULD THE DECEASED BE TREATED?

The body of the deceased must be handled with dignity and care.

Those performing the washing should:

Protect the deceased’s privacy.

Avoid unnecessary exposure of the body.

Handle the body gently.

Avoid gossiping about or revealing private matters noticed during the washing.

Follow the appropriate Islamic procedures.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Breaking the bone of a dead person is like breaking it when he is alive.”

— Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 3207

This hadith highlights the dignity owed to the deceased. Their death does not make them an object to be treated carelessly.

WHAT IF SOMEONE DIES IN UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES?

If the deceased died in an accident, had severe injuries or there are medical or legal restrictions, the washing procedure may need to be adapted. Qualified scholars and funeral professionals should be consulted to determine the appropriate Islamic procedure.

Do not assume that every case can be handled in exactly the same way.

CAN YOUNG MUSLIMS LEARN HOW TO WASH THE DECEASED?

Yes. Learning the rules of janazah and the rights of the deceased is beneficial. However, the actual washing should be performed by people who understand the procedure and can carry it out respectfully.

HEART CHECK

Death is a reminder that every soul will return to Allah. Honouring the deceased through proper washing, shrouding, prayer and burial is a responsibility of the Muslim community.

May Allah forgive our deceased, show mercy to them and grant them Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.
