There is a particular kind of pressure that comes with being young today.
You are expected to know what you want to do with your life. You are expected to build a career, make money, become successful, maintain relationships, look good, stay relevant, and somehow have everything figured out before you are even fully sure of who you are.
Social media makes the pressure even greater. You see people your age getting married, buying houses, starting businesses, travelling around the world, graduating, becoming influencers, building successful careers and achieving things that make you wonder whether you are falling behind.
And somewhere in the middle of all this, a young Muslim can begin to ask:
“Where does Allah fit into all of this?”
The answer is: Allah is not supposed to be something you fit into your life after everything else is arranged.
Allah is the reason your life has meaning in the first place.
YOU WERE NOT CREATED WITHOUT PURPOSE
One of the most important questions every young Muslim should ask is not “What career do I want?” or “How much money do I want to make?”
It is:
“Why did Allah create me?”
Allah gives us a direct answer in the Qur’an:
“And I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Qur’an 51:56)
This does not mean that a Muslim should abandon education, career, business, marriage, family, ambition or the pursuit of beneficial things.
Rather, it means that all of these things should exist within the larger purpose of living for Allah.
You can become a doctor and worship Allah.
You can become an engineer and worship Allah.
You can build a successful business and worship Allah.
You can become a teacher, designer, writer, entrepreneur, farmer, pilot or professional and worship Allah.
You can get married, raise children, support your parents and contribute to society — all while living a life directed towards Allah.
Your purpose is bigger than your profession.
Your job tells you what you do.
Your purpose tells you why you live.
YOUR YOUTH IS NOT A WAITING ROOM
Sometimes young Muslims think they will become serious about Islam later.
“I’m still young.”
“I will become more practicing when I get married.”
“When I settle down, I’ll start praying properly.”
“When I become financially stable, I’ll have more time for Qur’an.”
“When I’m older, I’ll become serious about my deen.”
But none of us has been promised an “older.”
Youth is not a waiting room before real life begins.
Your life is already happening.
The decisions you make today are shaping the person you will become tomorrow.
The habits you develop today can follow you for years.
The people you surround yourself with can influence your character.
The things you repeatedly watch can influence your heart.
The sins you repeatedly excuse can become difficult to leave.
And the acts of worship you establish today can become the foundation of your relationship with Allah for the rest of your life.
This is why your youth matters.
ALLAH VALUES THE YOUNG PERSON WHO CHOOSES HIM
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically mentioned a young person among those who will receive the special shade of Allah on the Day when there will be no shade except His.
Among the seven categories mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ is “a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah.” This narration is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
Think about what this teaches us.
Islam does not view youth merely as a period of mistakes, entertainment and self-discovery.
Youth can be a period of worship.
It can be a period of courage.
It can be a period of sacrifice.
It can be a period of learning.
It can be a period in which a person builds a relationship with Allah that changes the direction of their entire life.
You do not have to wait until you are old to become someone who matters.
You can matter now.
You can serve people now.
You can learn now.
You can give charity now.
You can stand for what is right now.
You can repent now.
You can pray now.
You can build something beneficial now.
You can become closer to Allah now.
YOUR PURPOSE IS NOT THE SAME AS SOMEONE ELSE’S
One of the biggest problems facing young people is comparison.
You look at someone else’s life and begin to question your own.
Someone is richer.
Someone is more educated.
Someone is more attractive.
Someone has a better job.
Someone has more followers.
Someone is already married.
Someone has travelled to places you have never seen.
Someone started a business at 21.
Someone memorised the Qur’an.
Someone became successful much earlier than you.
And you begin to think:
“Maybe I’m not doing enough.”
But Allah did not create every person to have the same journey.
Your responsibility is not to become another person.
Your responsibility is to become the best Muslim you can be with the life Allah has given you.
Your test may be different from theirs.
Your opportunities may be different.
Your weaknesses may be different.
Your responsibilities may be different.
Your rizq may be different.
Your timeline may be different.
And that is okay.
The goal is not to win someone else’s race.
The goal is to meet Allah having fulfilled your own responsibility.
YOUR DREAMS CAN HAVE A PLACE IN ISLAM
There is nothing wrong with having big dreams.
Islam does not teach young Muslims to be passive.
Dream.
Study.
Build.
Create.
Work.
Learn.
Travel.
Start a business.
Develop your skills.
Become excellent at what you do.
But never allow your ambition to become your god.
There is a difference between saying:
“I want to become successful so I can live a comfortable life and help my family.”
and saying:
“I need success because without it I have no value.”
There is a difference between wanting wealth and worshipping wealth.
There is a difference between building a career and building your entire identity around a career.
There is a difference between wanting recognition and becoming addicted to people’s approval.
A Muslim can pursue worldly success without allowing the dunya to become the purpose of existence.
YOUR PURPOSE MAY INCLUDE HELPING SOMEONE ELSE
Perhaps your purpose is not going to look extraordinary on social media.
Maybe Allah will use you to raise righteous children.
Maybe you will become the reason your parents live more comfortably.
Maybe you will teach one child Qur’an.
Maybe you will employ people through your business.
Maybe you will support someone who has nobody else.
Maybe you will give charity quietly for years.
Maybe you will become the friend who helps someone return to salah.
Maybe you will create something beneficial that continues helping people after you die.
We often imagine purpose as something huge and public.
But Allah can place enormous reward in things that nobody else notices.
A young Muslim should therefore stop asking only:
“What can make me famous?”
and start asking:
“What can make my life beneficial?”
DO NOT LET YOUR MISTAKES CONVINCE YOU THAT YOU HAVE NO PURPOSE
Perhaps this is where some young Muslims need the most encouragement.
You may have made mistakes.
You may have fallen into sins.
You may have wasted years.
You may have walked away from salah.
You may have had relationships you regret.
You may have made decisions you wish you could undo.
You may look at the person you are today and think:
“How can someone like me have a meaningful relationship with Allah?”
But your past does not cancel your future.
The door of repentance remains open.
The answer to your mistakes is not to give up.
The answer is to return to Allah.
Do not allow Shaytan to convince you that because you have sinned, you no longer deserve to try.
A believer can fall and rise again.
A believer can become weak and become strong again.
A believer can lose their way and return.
Your purpose did not disappear because you made mistakes.
You simply need to return to the One who gave you that purpose.
START WITH WHAT IS IN FRONT OF YOU
You do not need to transform your entire life overnight.
Start with salah.
Start with the Qur’an.
Start with making sincere tawbah.
Start with leaving one sin.
Start with improving your relationship with your parents.
Start with choosing better friends.
Start with learning your religion.
Start with giving a little charity.
Start with controlling your tongue.
Start with protecting your eyes.
Start with making better use of your time.
Start with asking Allah for guidance every day.
Small changes can become major changes when they are maintained consistently.
Your goal should not be to become perfect tomorrow.
Your goal should be to become better today.
YOUR YOUTH IS AN AMANAH
Your body is an amanah.
Your time is an amanah.
Your intelligence is an amanah.
Your opportunities are an amanah.
Your wealth is an amanah.
Your influence is an amanah.
Your youth itself is an amanah.
One day, the years that currently feel like they will last forever will simply become memories.
The late nights.
The university years.
The first job.
The friendships.
The opportunities.
The mistakes.
The moments when you had the chance to do something good.
Time moves whether we are prepared or not.
So do not waste your youth believing that you have plenty of time to become the person you want to be.
Become that person now.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE EVERYTHING FIGURED OUT
Perhaps you are 20 and confused.
Perhaps you are 25 and still searching.
Perhaps you are 28 and your life looks nothing like you imagined.
Perhaps you are approaching 30 and wondering whether you have achieved enough.
Do not let the numbers frighten you.
Allah is not asking you to know everything about your future.
He is asking you to walk towards Him.
You may not know where your career will take you.
You may not know when you will marry.
You may not know how your finances will develop.
You may not know what opportunities are coming.
But you can know who you are living for.
You are a servant of Allah.
And that identity remains whether you are successful or struggling, rich or poor, celebrated or unknown.
MAKE YOUR YOUTH COUNT
One day, you will look back at this period of your life.
You will wish you had appreciated some opportunities more.
You will wish you had protected your time.
You will wish you had spent more time with certain people.
You may wish you had taken your salah more seriously.
You may wish you had asked Allah for more.
You may wish you had worried less about people’s opinions.
You may wish you had stopped comparing your life to everyone else’s.
So start now.
Use your youth to build something that will survive your youth.
Build your relationship with Allah.
Build your character.
Build beneficial knowledge.
Build a halal career.
Build a healthy family.
Build friendships that bring you closer to goodness.
Build deeds that will continue to benefit you after death.
Most importantly, build a life that you will be proud to present before Allah.
You are young.
You may not have everything figured out.
You may still be making mistakes.
You may still be searching for your direction.
But never mistake uncertainty about your future for a lack of purpose.
Allah did not create you randomly.
Your life has meaning.
Your time has value.
Your youth has value.
Your choices have consequences.
And every day you are being given another opportunity to move closer to Allah.
Do not wait until you become older to start living with purpose.
Start now.
Your life is already an act of worship when you choose to live it for Allah.
A MESSAGE FOR EVERY YOUNG MUSLIM
Do not let the world convince you that success is measured only by money, followers, possessions, appearance or status.
Your greatest success is to live a life that earns the pleasure of Allah.
Build your dunya, but do not sacrifice your akhirah for it.
Have ambitions, but keep Allah at the centre.
Make mistakes, but return quickly.
Dream big, but remember Who controls the outcome.
And while you are still young, make a decision that can change the direction of your entire life:
“I want to become someone who, when I meet Allah, has something meaningful to bring.”
That is a purpose worth spending your youth on.
