EVERYONE IS DOING IT — SO WHY SHOULD I STOP?
“Everyone is doing it.”
It is one of the easiest things to say when we want to justify a decision we already know is wrong.
A young person may hear it from friends, see it on social media, or use it to convince themselves that a particular behaviour is now normal.
Everyone is partying.
Everyone is in relationships.
Everyone is dressing a certain way.
Everyone is chasing trends.
Everyone is doing things that Islam does not permit.
So the question becomes:
“If everyone is doing it, why should I stop?”
The answer is simple:
Because your relationship with Allah is not determined by what everyone else is doing.
POPULAR DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN RIGHT
Something does not become right simply because it is common.
If thousands of people make the same mistake, it is still a mistake.
Allah warns us about blindly following the majority:
“And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah.” (Qur’an 6:116)
Islam teaches us to think, reflect and make choices based on what pleases Allah—not simply what is popular.
The crowd may encourage you to follow a particular path, but you are still responsible for the path you choose.
PEER PRESSURE CAN BE POWERFUL
For young people especially, the desire to belong can be strong.
Nobody wants to feel left out.
Nobody wants to be called “too religious” or “different.”
Sometimes, saying no can feel harder than saying yes.
But there is strength in being able to say:
“Everyone may be doing it, but I choose not to.”
That is not weakness.
That is courage.
It takes courage to protect your values when everyone around you is compromising theirs.
YOUR FRIENDS WILL NOT ANSWER FOR YOU
Your friends may encourage you today, but they will not stand in your place before Allah.
The Qur’an reminds us that on the Day of Judgement, people may regret the company they kept:
“Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.”(Qur’an 25:27)
This is why choosing your friends matters.
A good friend will not pressure you into disobedience. A good friend will respect your boundaries and encourage you towards what is good.
Choose people who make you want to become better—not people who make sin feel normal.
YOU DON’T NEED TO FOLLOW EVERY TREND
Social media can make it appear as though “everyone” is living the same lifestyle.
But social media does not show the whole reality.
You see what people choose to post. You don’t see every consequence behind the scenes.
Don’t measure your life by what is trending.
Don’t sacrifice your modesty for attention.
Don’t sacrifice your peace for acceptance.
Don’t sacrifice your deen for a few likes, followers or temporary excitement.
What is popular today may disappear tomorrow, but the choices you make before Allah have lasting consequences.
BE THE PERSON WHO CAN SAY NO
Being a good Muslim does not mean you will never face temptation.
It means you learn to choose Allah when temptation comes.
When your friends say, “Everyone is doing it,” you can say:
“But I don’t have to.”
When someone says, “Nobody will know,” remember:
Allah knows.
When someone says, “You only live once,” remember that as a Muslim, you believe in an eternal life after this one.
You don’t have to prove yourself to the crowd.
You only need to remain true to the One who created you.
CHOOSE ALLAH, EVEN WHEN IT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT
Sometimes, staying firm on your deen will make you different.
And that is okay.
You may lose friends.
You may be mocked.
You may be left out.
But never be afraid of losing people’s approval when you are trying to gain Allah’s pleasure.
The Prophet (SAW) said:
“Islam began as something strange and it will return to being strange…”(Sahih Muslim)
Standing firm does not mean you think you are better than others. It simply means you know what you believe and you are willing to live by it.
A FINAL REMINDER
The next time you hear:
“Everyone is doing it—so why should you stop?”
Pause and ask yourself:
Is everyone going to answer for me before Allah?
No.
Will everyone be with me in my grave?
No.
Will everyone take responsibility for my choices on the Day of Judgement?
No.
So don’t let the crowd make decisions that belong to you.
Everyone may be doing it. But you have the courage to choose differently.
Choose your deen.
Choose your values.
Choose what pleases Allah.
Because sometimes, the strongest person in the crowd is not the one who follows everyone else.
It is the one who has the courage to say, “No—I choose Allah.
