If you listen to Muslims speaking or read Islamic books, you will notice something unique. Whenever the name of Prophet Muhammad is mentioned, Muslims often say “Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam (ﷺ),” which means “May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.”
Unlike titles such as “Mr.” or “Sir,” this phrase is an act of worship. But why do Muslims say it every time the Prophet’s name is mentioned?
A COMMAND FROM THE QUR’AN
The practice is not based on culture or tradition alone. It comes directly from the Qur’an.
Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask Allah to confer blessing upon him and ask Allah to grant him peace.”
This verse forms the basis for the Muslim practice of sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ whenever he is mentioned.
WHAT DOES “SALLALLAHU ALAYHI WASALLAM” MEAN?
The Arabic phrase consists of a supplication asking Allah to honour the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, increase his rank, and grant him peace.
It is not a greeting directed to the Prophet, nor is it an act of worship towards him. Rather, it is a prayer made to Allah on behalf of His Messenger.
For this reason, Muslims say the phrase out of love, respect and obedience to Allah’s command.
DID THE COMPANIONS PRACTISE THIS?
Yes.
The companions of the Prophet ﷺ regularly sent blessings upon him during his lifetime and continued to do so after his passing.
The Prophet ﷺ also taught them specific wording for sending blessings, particularly during the Tashahhud in every Salah.
Today, Muslims around the world continue this practice exactly as it has been passed down through generations.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SENDING BLESSINGS UPON THE PROPHET ﷺ?
Authentic hadith mention several virtues of sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
Among them is the glad tidings that whoever sends one blessing upon the Prophet ﷺ, Allah sends ten blessings upon that person.
The Prophet ﷺ also encouraged Muslims to increase their salutations upon him, especially on Fridays.
These narrations show that this simple act carries great spiritual reward.
WHY DON’T MUSLIMS JUST SAY “MUHAMMAD”?
In everyday speech, Muslims may simply say “the Prophet” or “Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.” Adding the phrase “Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam” is a way of showing respect while following the guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
It is similar to how Muslims say “Radiallahu Anhu” (May Allah be pleased with him) after mentioning the names of the companions.
These expressions remind believers of the honour and status of those who served Islam.
IS IT COMPULSORY EVERY SINGLE TIME?
Scholars have discussed the exact ruling in different situations. However, they all agree that sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ is among the greatest acts of remembrance and should never be neglected.
Many Muslims therefore make it a habit to say it whenever they mention his name, whether in speech or writing.
A SIMPLE PHRASE WITH GREAT MEANING
The words “Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam” take only a few seconds to say, yet they reflect a Muslim’s love for the Prophet ﷺ and obedience to Allah.
More importantly, they remind us that respecting the Prophet is not limited to words. True respect is shown by learning his Sunnah, following his example, and living according to the message he brought.
Every time a Muslim says “Muhammad ﷺ,” they are not merely repeating a phrase. They are making a sincere supplication, fulfilling a command from the Qur’an, and expressing gratitude for the Messenger who conveyed Allah’s guidance to humanity.
