One of the questions frequently asked by non-Muslims and even some young Muslims is why there are no authentic paintings, statues or physical images of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Unlike many historical figures whose likenesses have been preserved in art, Muslims have never relied on images to remember their Prophet. Instead, Islam adopted a different approach one that has protected his honour and preserved the purity of Islamic worship for more than fourteen centuries.
DID ANYONE PAINT THE PROPHET ﷺ DURING HIS LIFETIME?
No.
There is no authentic evidence that any of the Prophet’s companions painted his portrait or created a statue of him during his lifetime.
This is significant because the companions loved him more than anyone else. If preserving his physical appearance through images had been encouraged, they would have been the first to do so.
Instead, they preserved his teachings, character and words.
HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT THE PROPHET ﷺ LOOKED LIKE?
Although there are no authentic pictures, the companions carefully described his physical appearance in words.
Books of Hadith contain detailed descriptions of the Prophet ﷺ, including:

- His complexion.
- His hair.
- His beard.
- His smile.
- His manner of walking.
- His clothing.
- His noble character.
One of the most well-known collections describing his appearance is known as Ash-Shama’il, in which companions narrated what they personally observed.
These descriptions have allowed Muslims to learn about the Prophet ﷺ without relying on artistic imagination.
WHY DOES ISLAM DISCOURAGE MAKING IMAGES OF THE PROPHET ﷺ?
Islam places great emphasis on protecting Tawhid the worship of Allah alone.
History shows that many nations began by honouring righteous people with images and statues. Over time, those images became objects of excessive reverence and, in some cases, worship.
To prevent anything similar from happening, Islam closed the door to such practices.
By avoiding portraits and statues of the Prophet ﷺ, Muslims ensure that love for him remains focused on following his teachings rather than venerating an image.
DOES THIS MEAN MUSLIMS LOVE THE PROPHET ﷺ LESS?
Quite the opposite.
Muslims express their love for the Prophet ﷺ by following his Sunnah, studying his life, sending blessings upon him, and living according to his example.
Love in Islam is demonstrated through actions, not through portraits or statues.
A Muslim who follows the Prophet’s guidance in worship, honesty, kindness and good character is expressing genuine love for him.
WHAT ABOUT THE IMAGES FOUND ONLINE?
Many images circulating online claim to represent the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. These pictures are based entirely on artistic imagination.
None of them is authentic.
Since no verified portrait exists, no one can accurately claim that a particular image reflects the Prophet’s true appearance.
For this reason, Muslims should avoid sharing or believing such depictions.
WHAT IS THE GREATEST LEGACY OF THE PROPHET ﷺ?
The greatest legacy of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not his physical appearance but his message.
He delivered the Qur’an, taught people how to worship Allah, established justice, showed mercy to humanity and left behind an example that continues to guide over a billion Muslims.
His character, teachings and Sunnah have been preserved with remarkable care through authentic Islamic sources.
A LESSON FOR EVERY MUSLIM
The absence of pictures or statues of the Prophet ﷺ teaches an important lesson. Islam encourages believers to focus on principles rather than personalities and on guidance rather than appearance.
