ARE YOU GROWING IN DEEN OR JUST GROWING OLDER?
Every Monday marks the beginning of another week, but it also reminds us of something deeper: our time in this world is becoming shorter. We celebrate birthdays, career milestones, and personal achievements, yet one question often goes unasked: Am I becoming a better Muslim as I grow older?
Age is automatic. Spiritual growth is intentional.
A person can spend decades on earth and remain the same in character, worship, and relationship with Allah. Another person may live a shorter life but leave this world with a heart full of faith, sincerity, and righteous deeds. In Islam, the value of our lives is not measured by the number of years we live, but by what we do with those years.
EVERY DAY IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE
Allah has given us time as a blessing and a trust. Every sunrise is another chance to repent, learn, worship, and become a better servant of Allah.
Instead of seeing Monday as “just another working day,” see it as another opportunity to improve yourself.
Ask yourself:
- Am I praying with more sincerity than I did last year?
- Has my relationship with the Qur’an improved?
- Do I remember Allah more often?
- Have I become more patient and forgiving?
- Am I leaving behind habits that displease Allah?
These are the questions that truly measure progress.
SUCCESS IS NOT ONLY MATERIAL
Many people spend years pursuing promotions, wealth, and recognition. While there is nothing wrong with striving for lawful success, it should never come at the expense of our faith.
Imagine reaching every worldly goal but neglecting your Salah.
Imagine building a successful business while forgetting your Creator.
Imagine becoming famous but arriving before Allah with an empty record of good deeds.
True success is to succeed in this life without losing sight of the next.
SMALL CHANGES LEAD TO BIG RESULTS
Some people avoid improving because they think they must change everything overnight. Islam teaches us the opposite.
The Prophet ﷺ loved deeds that were consistent, even if they were small.
This week, focus on one improvement.
Perhaps you will:
- Pray every Salah on time.
- Read one page of the Qur’an each day.
- Say Astaghfirullah one hundred times daily.
- Stop a habit that harms your relationship with Allah.
- Spend a few minutes every night making sincere dua.
Small actions, performed consistently, transform lives.
DON’T DELAY YOUR RETURN TO ALLAH
One of the greatest tricks of Shaytan is convincing people that they have plenty of time.
He whispers:
“I’ll become more religious later.”
“I’ll repent when I’m older.”
“I’ll focus on my deen after I achieve my goals.”
But none of us knows how much time remains.
The wise believer does not postpone repentance or obedience. They begin today.
LEAVE A LEGACY OF RIGHTEOUS DEEDS
When your life is over, people will not remember how many meetings you attended, how many possessions you owned, or how many followers you had online.
What will matter is:
- The prayers you performed.
- The people you helped.
- The charity you gave.
- The knowledge you shared.
- The character you displayed.
- The children you raised upon Islam.
- The sincere acts of worship known only to Allah.
These are the deeds that continue to benefit you long after you have left this world.
MAKE THIS WEEK A TURNING POINT
Do not allow this week to pass like every other week.
Choose one area of your deen and commit to improving it.
If you have been neglecting the Qur’an, return to it.
If you have delayed repentance, seek Allah’s forgiveness today.
If your character needs improvement, begin with kindness, honesty, and patience.
Remember that every sincere step towards Allah is met with His mercy and guidance.
Growing older is inevitable. Growing closer to Allah is a choice.
As this new week begins, let it also mark the beginning of a stronger relationship with your Creator. Make every day count, because every day is one day closer to meeting Him.
May Allah bless our time, strengthen our faith, forgive our shortcomings, and make every passing year a means of increasing us in righteousness. Āmīn.
