STARTING THE WEEK WITH THE RIGHT INTENTION (NIYYAH)
Every Monday presents a new beginning. It is an opportunity to reset our priorities, leave behind the mistakes of the previous week, and start afresh with purpose. As Muslims, however, our week should not begin with a to-do list alone. It should begin with a sincere intention (niyyah).
In Islam, intention is more than just deciding to do something. It is the foundation upon which every action is judged. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This hadith teaches us that the value of our actions depends not only on what we do but also on why we do it. Two people may perform the same task, yet one earns immense reward while the other gains nothing beyond worldly benefit because of the difference in their intentions.
Why Intention Matters
Many Muslims think worship is limited to prayer, fasting, zakat, and Hajj. While these are among the greatest acts of worship, Islam teaches that even ordinary daily activities can become acts of worship if they are done with the right intention.
When you leave home for work intending to earn lawful income to provide for your family, your work becomes an act of worship.
When you study with the intention of gaining beneficial knowledge to serve society and please Allah, your education becomes worship.
When you prepare meals for your family seeking Allah’s pleasure, your cooking becomes worship.
Even resting after a tiring day can be rewarded if your intention is to regain strength for obedience to Allah.
This is one of the beauties of Islam: it transforms ordinary moments into opportunities to earn rewards.
Begin the Week with a Purpose
Instead of allowing Monday to begin with stress, deadlines, or worries, spend a few moments after Fajr or before leaving your home to renew your intention.
Ask yourself:
- Am I working today to please Allah?
- Will I be honest in my business dealings?
- Will I protect my tongue from gossip and backbiting?
- Will I fulfil my responsibilities with excellence?
- Will I remember Allah throughout my day?
These simple questions can change the direction of your entire week.
Set Spiritual Goals Alongside Worldly Goals
Many people write weekly goals related to business, finances, studies, or fitness. While these are important, a Muslim should also have spiritual goals.
This week, aim to:
- Perform every obligatory prayer on time.
- Read a portion of the Qur’an each day.
- Increase your remembrance of Allah through dhikr.
- Give charity, even if it is a small amount.
- Speak kindly to family members and colleagues.
- Seek forgiveness regularly by saying Astaghfirullah.
- Help someone without expecting anything in return.
These goals strengthen your relationship with Allah while improving your character and benefiting those around you.
Renew Your Intention Daily
Although today is Monday, intention is not something we make once and forget. It should be renewed regularly because our hearts can easily become distracted by praise, wealth, status, or personal ambition.
Before every major task, pause briefly and ask yourself:
“Am I doing this for the sake of Allah?”
That simple question can protect your sincerity and keep your heart focused on what truly matters.
A Week Worth Living
Success is not measured only by promotions, profits, or achievements. A truly successful week is one in which you grew closer to Allah, fulfilled your obligations, treated people with kindness, and left behind more good deeds than sins.
As you begin this new week, make your intention sincere. Let every meeting, every conversation, every business transaction, every lesson, and every act of service become a means of earning Allah’s pleasure.
A week that begins with the right intention is far more likely to end with blessings, peace, and reward.
May Allah purify our intentions, accept our deeds, and make every step we take this week a means of drawing closer to Him. Āmīn.
