THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FRIDAY (JUMU’AH) IN ISLAM
Friday, known as Yawm al-Jumu’ah, holds a special place in Islam. It is not just the end of the workweek but a weekly Eid for Muslims a day of gathering, worship, and spiritual renewal. Allah and His Messenger ﷺ emphasized its importance, making it a day filled with mercy, forgiveness, and blessings.
Qur’anic Emphasis on Jumu’ah
Allah ﷻ commands believers to give priority to Jumu’ah prayer:
“O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”
(Surah Al-Jumu’ah, 62:9)
This shows that worldly affairs should pause so the believer can focus on salah and remembrance.
Jumu’ah in the Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ highlighted the significance of Friday in many narrations:
-
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled therefrom. And the Hour will not be established except on Friday.”
(Sahih Muslim) -
He ﷺ also said: “Whoever performs ghusl on Friday, then goes to the Friday prayer, listens attentively and remains silent, will have his sins forgiven between that Friday and the next, plus three extra days.”
(Sahih Muslim)
