KHADIJAH: THE WOMAN WHO STOOD BESIDE THE PROPHET

MUSLIM WOMAN

MUSLIM WOMAN
MUSLIM WOMAN

Before the world believed in him, she believed in him. Before Islam had a community, she supported its Messenger. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) returned home frightened after receiving the first revelation, Khadijah was the person who comforted him, reassured him and reminded him of the goodness within him. This is the extraordinary story of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her), the woman whose love, faith and sacrifice became an unforgettable part of Islamic history.

Imagine being the first person someone turns to when the entire world seems uncertain.

Imagine being the person who offers comfort when fear takes over, who provides reassurance when others doubt, and who stands beside someone when the future is unknown.

Now imagine doing all of this at a time when the message you support is being rejected, ridiculed and opposed by the society around you.

This was the remarkable position of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid.

She was a respected businesswoman in Makkah, known for her intelligence, dignity and honesty. She had wealth, influence and an established position in society.

Yet, her greatest legacy was not the wealth she accumulated or the business she managed.

It was her unwavering support for Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) during the earliest and most difficult days of Islam.

She was the first person to believe in his Prophethood.

She comforted him when he received the first revelation.

She supported him emotionally, financially and spiritually when the opposition against Islam began.

Her story reminds us that sometimes the greatest contribution a person can make is simply to stand firmly beside the truth, even when doing so comes at a great personal cost.

So, who was Khadijah? How did she meet the Prophet? What happened when the first revelation came? And why did the Prophet continue to remember her long after her death?

Let’s explore the life of one of the greatest women in Islamic history.

1. WHO WAS KHADIJAH BINT KHUWAYLID?

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid came from the respected Quraysh tribe in Makkah.

She was known for her intelligence, good character, business ability and respected position within society.

Historical accounts describe her as a successful businesswoman who managed commercial activities and employed people to conduct trade on her behalf.

At a time when commercial opportunities were often dominated by men, Khadijah demonstrated exceptional business judgement and independence.

She was financially established and had considerable influence.

However, what made her truly remarkable was not simply her wealth.

It was the way she used her resources and position.

She was known for her dignity, generosity and commitment to doing what was right.

Before the beginning of Islam, she had already earned a reputation for honourable conduct.

Her story challenges the idea that a woman’s importance should be measured only through marriage or her relationship with others.

Khadijah was a woman of substance in her own right.

She had built a respected life, managed business affairs and demonstrated qualities that would later make her an extraordinary source of support for the Messenger of Allah.

2. HOW KHADIJAH MET PROPHET MUHAMMAD

Before Prophethood, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was already known among the people of Makkah for his honesty and trustworthy character.

He had earned the reputation of Al-Amin, meaning the trustworthy one.

Khadijah heard about his excellent character and business abilities.

She entrusted him with the responsibility of taking her merchandise on a trading journey to Syria.

She also sent her servant, Maysarah, to accompany him.

During the journey, Muhammad conducted the business affairs with honesty and integrity.

When the journey ended, Maysarah reported what he had observed.

He spoke about Muhammad’s exceptional character, honesty and conduct during the trip.

Khadijah was impressed.

She had encountered many people in business, but Muhammad stood out because of his integrity and character.

As she learned more about him, she developed an interest in marrying him.

Historical accounts describe how she expressed this interest through a proposal.

Muhammad accepted, and they were married.

At the time, Khadijah was older than Muhammad, and their marriage became one of the most significant relationships in Islamic history.

Their relationship was built upon trust, respect and affection.

3. A MARRIAGE BUILT ON LOVE, TRUST AND RESPECT

The marriage between Khadijah and Prophet Muhammad was a remarkable example of companionship.

They shared a home, raised a family and supported one another through different stages of life.

Khadijah was not simply his wife.

She was his confidante, his companion and someone whose judgement he trusted.

Their marriage was blessed with children, including their daughters Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum and Fatimah, and their sons Al-Qasim and Abdullah.

Their sons died in childhood, while their daughters lived through important periods of early Islamic history.

During their marriage, Muhammad continued to spend time reflecting on the condition of society.

He was deeply troubled by the injustice, idolatry and moral corruption around him.

He would frequently withdraw to the Cave of Hira, where he spent time in solitude and worship.

Khadijah understood his need for reflection and supported him.

She did not discourage him or dismiss his concerns.

Instead, she respected his character and the seriousness with which he approached life.

This teaches us something important about marriage.

A good marriage is not simply about sharing a home or enjoying comfortable circumstances.

It is also about recognising one another’s strengths, respecting each other’s responsibilities and providing support during difficult moments.

4. THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED THE WORLD: THE FIRST REVELATION

One of the most important moments in Islamic history took place in the Cave of Hira.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the cave when the Angel Jibril appeared before him.

The angel commanded him to read.

The Prophet responded that he could not read.

The angel embraced him firmly and repeated the command.

The encounter continued until the opening verses of Surah Al-Alaq were revealed.

“Read in the name of your Lord who created.”

(Qur’an 96:1)

This was the beginning of Prophethood.

The experience was overwhelming.

The Prophet returned home deeply shaken and asked to be covered.

He said:

“Cover me! Cover me!”

Khadijah immediately responded with care and concern.

She comforted him until his fear subsided.

Think about this moment.

The Messenger of Allah had just experienced something extraordinary, something that would change the course of human history.

He needed someone who would listen without judgement.

Someone who would reassure him.

Someone who understood his character.

Khadijah was that person.

She did not dismiss his experience or accuse him of imagining what had happened.

Instead, she reminded him of the goodness that had always defined his character.

5. THE WORDS THAT COMFORTED THE PROPHET

Perhaps the most beautiful part of Khadijah’s story is what she said when the Prophet returned from the Cave of Hira.

She reassured him:

“By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you.”

She then explained why she believed this.

She reminded him that he maintained family ties, helped the poor, supported those in difficulty, honoured guests and assisted people facing hardship.

Her response is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Consider the depth of her words.

She did not comfort him with empty promises.

She reminded him of his character.

She understood that a person who consistently does good, supports others and treats people with compassion has a character worthy of honour.

Her reassurance teaches us an important lesson about the role of a spouse.

Sometimes, people face moments of fear, uncertainty and emotional distress.

During those moments, they do not always need criticism or judgement.

They need understanding, compassion and reassurance.

Khadijah demonstrated this beautifully.

She recognised the character of the man she had married and stood beside him at a moment when he needed her most.

6. KHADIJAH WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO BELIEVE IN ISLAM

After the first revelation, Khadijah accepted the message of Islam.

She became the first person to believe in Prophet Muhammad’s Prophethood.

Think about what this meant.

There was no established Muslim community.

There were no Islamic institutions, mosques filled with worshippers or large gatherings of believers.

The message was just beginning.

The Prophet was facing an entirely new responsibility, and the people of Makkah had not yet understood what was happening.

But Khadijah believed him.

She did not wait to see whether Islam would become popular.

She did not wait for other people to accept the message.

She recognised the truth and supported the Messenger of Allah.

Her faith was among the first foundations of the Muslim community.

This is one reason her place in Islamic history is so extraordinary.

She was present at the beginning, when the message was still being received by a small number of people.

She believed before the majority of society had even considered listening.

7. SHE SUPPORTED ISLAM WITH HER WEALTH

Khadijah was financially established, and her resources became an important source of support for the early Muslim community.

The Prophet faced increasing opposition as he began calling people towards Islam.

His message challenged the beliefs, traditions and interests of influential people in Makkah.

The early Muslims experienced hostility, social pressure and persecution.

During this difficult period, Khadijah supported the Prophet and the cause of Islam.

Her wealth and resources helped provide stability during the earliest years of the mission.

She did not treat her financial position as something to protect at all costs.

She used what Allah had blessed her with to support the truth.

This is an important lesson for Muslims today.

Wealth is not inherently bad.

Having money, running a business or building financial security are not contrary to Islam.

The important question is how we use what Allah has given us.

Do we use our resources only for ourselves, or do we also help others?

Do we remember the poor, support beneficial causes and contribute to our communities?

Khadijah’s example teaches us that wealth becomes meaningful when it is used with sincerity and generosity.

8. THE BOYCOTT AND THE YEARS OF HARDSHIP

As Islam began to spread, the opposition from the Quraysh became increasingly severe.

The leaders of Makkah attempted to pressure the Prophet and the Muslims into abandoning their faith.

Among their methods was a social and economic boycott against Banu Hashim and Banu Al-Muttalib, the clans that protected the Prophet.

The boycott restricted trade and marriage relations and placed enormous pressure on those affected.

The Prophet, Khadijah and other members of the community endured significant hardship.

Khadijah, who had once enjoyed financial comfort and an established position, experienced the difficulties of the boycott alongside the Prophet.

The situation was far removed from the life of luxury she had previously known.

Yet, she remained committed.

She did not abandon the Prophet when circumstances became difficult.

She did not withdraw her support when the cost of faith became greater.

Her loyalty was not dependent on comfort.

This is one of the most powerful lessons from her life.

Anyone can claim to support someone when everything is going well.

But genuine loyalty becomes visible when hardship arrives.

Khadijah demonstrated that true companionship means standing together through difficult circumstances.

9. THE YEAR OF SORROW: WHEN THE PROPHET LOST KHADIJAH

After years of hardship and opposition, the Prophet experienced one of the most painful periods of his life.

In the tenth year of Prophethood, Khadijah passed away.

Her death was a tremendous loss.

She had been his wife, his first believer, his emotional support and a source of strength throughout the earliest years of Islam.

Not long after her death, the Prophet also lost his uncle Abu Talib, who had provided important protection against the hostility of Quraysh.

Because of these painful losses, that period became known as the Year of Sorrow.

The Prophet had lost two people who had played important roles in his life.

But Khadijah’s place in his heart remained special.

Even years after her death, he continued to remember her with love and gratitude.

This teaches us that genuine love does not simply disappear when someone passes away.

The goodness a person brings into our lives can remain with us long after they are gone.

Their sacrifices, kindness and support can become part of our memories forever.

10. THE PROPHET NEVER FORGOT KHADIJAH

One of the most touching aspects of Khadijah’s story is how the Prophet continued to honour her memory.

He would speak about her goodness and remember the support she had given him.

He also maintained kindness towards people who had been close to her.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet would frequently remember Khadijah.

Aisha explained that she sometimes felt jealous because of the Prophet’s continued praise of his deceased wife.

However, the Prophet would respond by mentioning Khadijah’s virtues.

In an authentic narration, he explained that she believed in him when others rejected him, accepted his message when others denied him, supported him with her wealth when others withheld their support, and that Allah had granted him children through her.

This narration is recorded in Musnad Ahmad and other Hadith collections, with supporting authentic reports about his remembrance of her.

These words reveal the depth of his gratitude.

He had not forgotten the woman who stood beside him when Islam was still in its earliest days.

His behaviour also teaches us something about marriage.

Do not take your spouse’s support for granted.

Recognise their sacrifices.

Appreciate their kindness.

Remember the people who stood beside you when life was difficult.

Gratitude is an important part of love.

11. KHADIJAH’S SPECIAL STATUS IN ISLAM

Khadijah was not simply respected because she was married to the Prophet.

Her status was recognised through the teachings of Islam.

In an authentic narration, the Angel Jibril came to the Prophet and conveyed greetings from Allah to Khadijah.

Jibril also gave her glad tidings of a house in Paradise.

The Prophet was instructed to give her the news of a house in Paradise made of hollowed pearls, in which there would be neither noise nor fatigue.

This narration is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Imagine receiving such extraordinary news.

A woman who had supported the Prophet through the earliest and most difficult days of Islam was given glad tidings of a special reward in the Hereafter.

Her status demonstrates the importance of sincerity, faith, patience and sacrifice.

She is also counted among the greatest women in Islamic history.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned her alongside Maryam bint Imran, Asiyah, the wife of Pharaoh, and Fatimah bint Muhammad in narrations discussing the excellence of women.

Her example remains a source of inspiration for Muslim women and men alike.

12. WHAT KHADIJAH TEACHES MUSLIM WOMEN TODAY

Khadijah’s story contains lessons that are particularly meaningful for Muslim women.

She demonstrated that a woman can be financially successful, intelligent, independent in managing her affairs and deeply committed to her faith.

She did not have to choose between being accomplished in business and being devoted to Allah.

She showed that wealth can be used for good, that marriage can be built upon mutual respect and that a woman’s contribution to Islamic history can be extraordinary.

Here are some important lessons from her life.

1. Your worth is not defined by your marital status.

Khadijah was an accomplished woman before her marriage to the Prophet.

Her identity and contribution extended beyond her role as a wife.

2. Financial independence can be used for good.

She demonstrated business ability and used her resources to support the Prophet and Islam.

3. A strong woman can also be compassionate.

Her strength was not expressed through arrogance but through generosity, wisdom and emotional support.

4. Stand beside what is right.

Khadijah did not abandon the truth when society opposed it.

5. Support your spouse’s good intentions.

She understood the importance of the Prophet’s mission and supported him through its most difficult beginnings.

6. Never underestimate the impact of your generosity.

The resources Allah gives us can become a means of helping others and earning reward.

7. Leave behind a legacy of goodness.

Khadijah’s influence continued long after her death because of the faith, support and sacrifices she offered.

13. WHAT KHADIJAH TEACHES MUSLIM MEN ABOUT MARRIAGE

Khadijah’s story is equally important for Muslim men.

Her marriage to Prophet Muhammad offers lessons about the qualities that make a relationship strong.

The Prophet recognised her goodness, appreciated her support and continued to honour her memory after her death.

He did not forget what she had contributed to his life.

This is an important reminder that a wife should not be taken for granted.

Marriage is not simply about what one person can receive from another.

It involves mutual care, respect, gratitude and responsibility.

Muslim men should recognise the efforts their wives make, appreciate their contributions and treat them with kindness.

A successful marriage is not built upon financial provision alone.

It also requires emotional support, good communication, patience and mutual understanding.

The relationship between Khadijah and the Prophet reminds us that love should be accompanied by respect and gratitude.

14. WHY KHADIJAH’S STORY STILL MATTERS TODAY

We live in a world where relationships are sometimes treated as temporary arrangements.

People can become more focused on what they receive from others than on what they contribute.

Some marriages struggle because appreciation disappears.

Others experience difficulties because one person feels unsupported, unheard or undervalued.

Khadijah’s story reminds us that a strong relationship is built through trust, loyalty and shared values.

She supported the Prophet before he became the leader of a growing Muslim community.

She believed in him before others accepted his message.

She remained beside him when society turned against him.

And the Prophet continued to honour her long after she had passed away.

Her story also challenges the way society sometimes views women’s achievements.

Khadijah was a successful businesswoman, a loving wife, a mother and a woman of extraordinary faith.

Her life demonstrates that these qualities can exist together.

Most importantly, she reminds us that the greatest legacy we leave behind is not necessarily what we accumulate, but how we use our lives to serve Allah and benefit others.

CONCLUSION: BEFORE THE WORLD BELIEVED, KHADIJAH DID

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid’s story is one of the most beautiful examples of faith, love and sacrifice in Islamic history.

She was a successful businesswoman who had built a respected life in Makkah.

She married a man known for his honesty and character.

When he received the first revelation, she comforted him and reassured him.

When the message of Islam faced rejection, she believed.

When the Prophet needed support, she stood beside him.

When the Muslims experienced hardship, she shared in their difficulties.

And when she passed away, the Prophet continued to remember her with deep love and gratitude.

Her story teaches us that greatness is not always found in public recognition or worldly achievements.

Sometimes, greatness is found in the quiet strength of someone who refuses to abandon the truth.

Khadijah did not live to witness the full spread of Islam across the world.

But her contribution to its earliest days will never be forgotten.

She reminds us that supporting someone in their most difficult moments can leave a legacy that lasts for generations.

Perhaps the most important question her story leaves us with is this:

Are we the kind of people who stand beside others only when life is easy, or do we remain loyal when the difficulties begin?

May Allah be pleased with Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, grant her the highest ranks of Jannatul Firdaus and allow us to learn from her faith, generosity, patience and character.

May Allah bless our marriages, strengthen our families, increase love and understanding between spouses and make us people who support one another in goodness.

Ameen.
