TAWHЕED: THE ONENESS OF ALLAH AND WHY EVERY MUSLIM MUST UNDERSTAND IT
One of the most important things every Muslim must learn is Tawheed, the belief that Allah is One and that He alone deserves to be worshipped.
Islam is built upon this fundamental belief. It is the message that every Prophet brought to humanity: worship Allah alone and do not associate any partner with Him.
However, understanding Tawheed goes beyond simply saying that there is only one God. It involves recognising Allah’s uniqueness, directing our worship exclusively to Him, and avoiding anything that contradicts His oneness.
Every Muslim should therefore make an effort to understand Tawheed, its importance, its different aspects, and how to practise it in everyday life.
WHAT IS TAWHЕED?
Tawheed is an Arabic term that refers to affirming the oneness of Allah.
It means believing that Allah is the only true God, the Creator and Sustainer of everything, and the only One worthy of worship.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And your god is one God. There is no deity except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:163
This verse establishes a central principle of Islam: Allah is One, and no one shares His right to be worshipped.
A Muslim who understands Tawheed recognises that prayer, supplication, reliance in worship, sacrifice as an act of worship, and all other forms of worship must be directed to Allah alone.
Tawheed also means affirming what Allah has revealed about His names and attributes without likening Him to His creation.
WHY IS TAWHЕED SO IMPORTANT IN ISLAM?
Tawheed is the foundation upon which a Muslim’s faith is built. It gives meaning to our worship and explains why we were created.
Allah says:
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
— Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:56
This verse reminds us that worshipping Allah is the central purpose of our existence.
We were not created merely to accumulate wealth, pursue worldly success, or seek people’s approval. These things may form part of our lives, but our ultimate purpose is to know Allah, worship Him, and live according to His guidance.
Understanding Tawheed helps a Muslim to:
- Worship Allah sincerely without directing acts of worship to anyone else.
- Place ultimate trust in Allah while taking practical steps to achieve good outcomes.
- Seek Allah’s help and guidance through sincere supplication.
- Avoid associating partners with Allah.
- Develop humility by recognising that every blessing ultimately comes from Him.
- Remain steadfast in faith during both hardship and prosperity.
Tawheed is not simply a subject to study; it is a belief that should shape our entire lives.
THE THREE CATEGORIES OF TAWHЕED
Many Islamic scholars explain Tawheed through three categories. These categories are a teaching framework used to help students understand the different aspects of Allah’s oneness.
1. TAWHЕED AR-RUBUBIYYAH — THE ONENESS OF ALLAH’S LORDSHIP
This means believing that Allah alone is the Creator, Owner, Sustainer, and ultimate Controller of everything.
He created the heavens and the earth, provides for His creation, gives life and causes death, and has complete authority over all things.
Allah says:
“Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.”
— Surah Az-Zumar 39:62
Believing in Allah’s Lordship means recognising that our lives, abilities, possessions, and opportunities ultimately depend upon Him.
For example, when we receive a blessing, we should be grateful to Allah. When we face difficulties, we should remember that Allah has complete knowledge and power, even when we cannot understand the wisdom behind what is happening.
However, belief that Allah is the Creator must also be accompanied by worshipping Him alone.
2. TAWHЕED AL-ULUHIYYAH — THE ONENESS OF WORSHIP
This means directing all acts of worship exclusively to Allah.
It is the practical expression of Tawheed in our daily lives.
Prayer, supplication as an act of worship, vows of worship, and sacrifices offered as acts of worship must be directed to Allah alone.
Allah says:
“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth.”
— Surah Al-Bayyinah 98:5
This teaches us that worship must be sincere.
A Muslim should pray to Allah, ask Him for guidance, seek His forgiveness, and direct their religious devotion to Him alone.
We must also distinguish between worship and ordinary requests made to other people. Asking a living person for ordinary help that they are able to provide is not the same as directing an act of worship to them.
Understanding this distinction helps us practise Tawheed with knowledge rather than making careless accusations against others.
3. TAWHЕED AL-ASMA’ WAS-SIFAT — THE ONENESS OF ALLAH’S NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES
This means affirming the beautiful names and perfect attributes that Allah has revealed about Himself, and those established through authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Allah says:
“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”
— Surah Ash-Shura 42:11
This verse teaches us that Allah possesses attributes of perfection, but nothing in His creation resembles Him.
For example, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Hearing, and All-Seeing. His knowledge, hearing, and sight are perfect and unlike the limited abilities of human beings.
A Muslim should learn Allah’s names and attributes from reliable Islamic sources, without inventing descriptions of Allah or comparing Him to created things.
WHAT IS SHIRK, AND WHY MUST MUSLIMS AVOID IT?
Shirk means associating partners with Allah in what belongs exclusively to Him.
It is the opposite of Tawheed and is among the gravest sins in Islam.
Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”
— Surah An-Nisa 4:48
This verse refers to dying without repenting from shirk. It does not mean that a person who sincerely repents from shirk during their lifetime cannot be forgiven.
Shirk can involve directing acts of worship to someone or something besides Allah, believing that another being shares Allah’s exclusive divinity, or attributing divine powers to created beings in ways that contradict Islamic belief.
Muslims should learn about shirk so that they can protect their faith. However, applying these rulings to particular people or situations requires knowledge, context, and care. Not every mistake, cultural practice, or unfamiliar action automatically constitutes major shirk.
We should learn the evidence, ask qualified scholars when uncertain, and avoid hastily declaring other Muslims to be outside Islam.
COMMON MISTAKES MUSLIMS SHOULD AVOID
Understanding Tawheed also means being careful about common misunderstandings.
1. Believing that simply saying the Shahadah is enough
The Shahadah is the declaration of faith, but its meaning must be understood and sincerely believed. A Muslim should strive to live according to what it teaches.
2. Depending on people while forgetting Allah
Islam does not prohibit seeking help from people. We can consult doctors, seek advice, ask others for assistance, and work towards our goals.
The important distinction is that we recognise Allah as the ultimate source of help and never attribute to created beings powers that belong exclusively to Him.
3. Performing acts of worship for people’s praise
Doing good deeds to gain admiration can undermine sincerity. Muslims should regularly examine their intentions and seek to please Allah rather than live for public approval.
4. Learning about Allah through unreliable sources
Not every religious quotation, online video, or popular spiritual claim is authentic. Muslims should verify what they learn against the Qur’an, authentic Sunnah, and reliable scholarship.
5. Arguing about Tawheed without practising it
Knowledge should lead to sincere worship, good character, humility, and obedience. Learning Islamic terminology is not a substitute for putting the teachings of Islam into practice.
HOW CAN A MUSLIM STRENGTHEN THEIR TAWHЕED?
Strengthening Tawheed is a lifelong process. Every Muslim can take practical steps to deepen their understanding and strengthen their relationship with Allah.
1. Learn the meaning of the Shahadah. Understand what it means to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
2. Study the Qur’an. Pay attention to the verses that explain Allah’s oneness, His names and attributes, and the purpose of worship.
3. Learn the authentic Sunnah. Study the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) through reliable Hadith and qualified teachers.
4. Make your worship sincere. Examine your intentions before and during your acts of worship, and seek Allah’s pleasure.
5. Make du’a to Allah. Ask Him for guidance, steadfastness, forgiveness, and protection from anything that could undermine your faith.
6. Reflect on Allah’s blessings. Recognise your dependence upon Him and express gratitude for the blessings He has given you.
7. Avoid religious exaggeration and unfounded claims. Learn the evidence and context before accepting or spreading claims about what constitutes Tawheed or shirk.
CONCLUSION
Tawheed is the foundation of Islam and one of the most important subjects every Muslim should understand.
It teaches us that Allah alone is the Creator and Sustainer, that He alone deserves worship, and that His names and attributes are perfect and unlike those of His creation.
Understanding Tawheed helps us worship Allah sincerely, protect our faith, place our trust in Him, and live according to the guidance He has revealed.
Let us make learning Tawheed a priority, seek knowledge from reliable sources, and strive to make our beliefs, worship, and actions consistent with the message of Islam.
May Allah keep our hearts firm upon Tawheed, protect us from shirk, grant us beneficial knowledge, and allow us to meet Him upon sincere faith. Amin.
