MURIC URGES RESPECT FOR CHIEF IMAMS, CALLS FOR HARMONY BETWEEN GOVERNMENT AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, issues this sensitization message to the Oyo State Government, political parties, and politicians across the state on the imperative of according due respect and recognition to the office and responsibilities of Chief Imams.

MURIC emphasizes that Chief Imams occupy highly revered positions as spiritual leaders, community guides, and custodians of Islamic teachings. Their roles are central to the moral and religious well-being of the Muslim community and, as such, must be treated with dignity, honour, and appropriate regard in all official engagements.

In light of this, the organization respectfully urges all political actors and government officials to observe the following guidelines when planning events or extending invitations to Chief Imams:

Avoid scheduling official programmes on Fridays during Jumu’ah periods, to allow Imams adequate time to prepare for and observe obligatory congregational prayers without conflict.
Provide adequate notice for invitations, with a minimum of one week’s formal and respectful communication, except in cases of urgency or unavoidable circumstances.
Recognize the leadership and teaching roles of Imams, ensuring they are not treated merely as ceremonial guests but as esteemed religious authorities whose presence commands respect.
Make appropriate welfare arrangements, including separate serving provisions where necessary, in line with their religious obligations and personal preferences.
Ensure dignified seating arrangements, placing Chief Imams in honourable positions and clearly away from areas where alcohol is served, in order to preserve the sanctity of their office and beliefs.

MURIC reiterates that fostering mutual respect between political institutions and religious leaders is essential for strengthening social harmony, promoting peaceful coexistence, and building a more inclusive and morally conscious society.

The organization calls on all stakeholders to work collectively towards honouring and supporting those who provide spiritual guidance and leadership within our communities.
