RAMADAN DAY 9: THE CHARACTER OF THE FASTING PERSON
By Day 9, the physical aspect of fasting is no longer new. Hunger is familiar. Thirst is manageable. The real question now is deeper:
Is your character changing?
Fasting is not simply abstaining from food and drink. It is a training program for the soul. The Prophet ﷺ made it clear that fasting without moral discipline defeats its purpose. A fasting person is expected to look different not physically, but behaviorally.
1. Controlled Speech
A fasting person guards the tongue. No gossip. No insults. No unnecessary arguments.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If one does not give up false speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving food and drink.”
Sahih al-Bukhari
Fasting without discipline in speech weakens its reward. Day 9 is a good time to assess your conversations online and offline.
2. Patience Under Pressure
Hunger can make people irritable. But fasting trains restraint.
When provoked, the fasting person does not react impulsively. They respond with control. The Prophet ﷺ taught that if someone insults you while fasting, you should say, “I am fasting.”
That response is not weakness it is strength.
3. Increased Mercy
A fasting heart becomes softer. You begin to understand hunger. You become more generous. Charity increases. Compassion grows.
If Ramadan has not increased your empathy for others, something is missing.
4. Humility
Fasting reminds you of your dependence on Allah. Something as basic as water becomes a blessing you cannot access without His permission.
That realization should produce humility, not arrogance.
5. Consistency in Good Deeds
The character of the fasting person is stable not emotional. They do not worship intensely for two days and disappear for three. They build steady habits.
Small daily Qur’an.
Consistent salah.
Controlled behavior.
That is the sign of growth.
By Day 9, your stomach is adjusting. Now let your character adjust too.
The real success of Ramadan is not weight loss. It is ego loss. It is anger reduction. It is discipline development.
If your behavior improves, your fast is working.
If your character is refining, your Ramadan is progressing.
May Allah make us among those whose fasting transforms both heart and conduct.
