THE HUMBLE TAILOR WHO WALKED BY FAITH: ISMAIL SHUAIBU MUSA’S JOURNEY TO ARAFAT

This is the story of Ismail Shuaibu Musa — a man of unwavering faith, relentless perseverance, and profound humility.

Once a tailor by trade, age and time have steered him into selling sewing threads to earn a living. Yet behind his modest livelihood lay a dream twelve years in the making: to one day stand on the plains of Arafat in humble devotion to his Lord.

For over a decade, Malam Ismail saved whatever he could, driven by a singular hope — Hajj. But in 2022, following the liberalization of foreign exchange which sharply raised the cost of Hajj, the painful reality began to dawn: his savings might never suffice for the journey to Saudi Arabia.

Still, he refused to give up.

Determined, he chose the path of the early pilgrims  to walk and rely on his physical strength. In February 2023, he set out with only faith in his heart and Allah as his guide. He braved insecurity, hunger, and exhaustion, eventually making it to Sudan after a long and perilous journey.

In Sudan, he toiled for a month, taking on any honorable job to survive. His efforts bore fruit — he raised enough money for a Hajj visa and a flight to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His heart brimmed with gratitude. His dream was within reach. Arafat was calling.

But then came the storm, In April 2023, conflict broke out in Sudan. Chaos replaced calm, borders were sealed, and fear overwhelmed the land. Malam Ismail found himself trapped — so close to his destination, yet unable to move forward. On Eid day, instead of joining pilgrims in the sacred Haram, he wept on unfamiliar ground, mourning a dream painfully deferred.

Eventually, he was among the Nigerians evacuated and brought home. His story, however, did not end there.

It reached the ears of the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman. Moved by Malam Ismail’s courage and sacrifice, the Chairman extended a rare gesture: a complimentary Hajj slot under NAHCON’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative — a recognition of a man whose faith surpassed his means.

The moral of Malam Ismail’s journey is timeless:

When your heart is set on worship, strive with what you have. Put your trust in Allah, not in people. He will open doors even where none seem to exist.

In a time when many of the wealthy lobby for Hajj slots — some using influence without regard for the rightful or the lawful — Malam Ismail’s story stands apart. He had no wealth, no connections, and no privilege. All he had was his sincere longing to answer Allah’s call.

He is not just a thread seller. He is a symbol of faith, resilience, and divine favor.

In a world full of entitlement, Malam Ismail Shuaibu Musa is a true hero.
